Cambridge opens with pair of victories
WAUNETA - With a pair of steady performances, the Cambridge girls basketball team started its season with a pair of road victories.
The Trojans took down Hitchcock County, 49-28, on Thursday behind a 21-5 third quarter burst to put the game away.
Friday, the Trojans started strong, but needed to make plays in the fourth quarter to put away a 47-43 win at Wauneta-Palisade.
Cambridge led the Broncos 18-10 after a quarter, but Wa-Pa closed the gap to 27-22 at the half and used sixstraight to open the third for their first lead of the game.
Cambridge recovered for a 35-34 lead to the fourth.
There, the Trojans were unable to shake the Broncos until the final minutes when they made a few free throws to build a seven-point victory before hanging on by four.
Autumn Deterding scored ii and had eight boards to lead Cambridge while Jalen Kent scored 10 and Schyler Hoberty added nine. Breelle Miller had six steals and Paige Klumpe grabbed seven rebounds. Jacey Kent added six points.
Hoberty led the team with 16 points at Hitchcock County and Klumpe scored 10. Deterding had nine and she and Jacey Kent each had seven rebounds. Miller had four steals and Hoberty, Klumpe and Carsyn Hanes each had two assists.
