Trojan girls take runner-up at Pleasanton Holiday Tournament
PLEASANTON- On Monday and Tuesday evening the Cambridge girls basketball team went to Pleasanton to compete in their annual Holiday Tournament and came away with a second-place finish. In their first matchup of the tournament, they took on Pleasanton and won in gritty fashion, 30-22.
The Bulldogs took control to begin with as they led 9-4 after the first eight minutes. In the second period though, Cambridge found a groove on the offensive side as they poured in 13 points and went into the intermission up 17- 13.
In the second half, it was a defensive struggle as the third quarter only had five points scored between the two teams and Cambridge led 21-14 heading into the final stanza. In the final period Cambridge was up by as many as eight with three minutes to go. But the Bulldogs went on a mini 4-0 run to cut the deficit to 26-22. But Cambridge was able to go 4-5 from the charity stripe in the final minutes to seal the game.
Cambridge had a big game from Jalen Kent as she scored 10 points to lead the way for the Trojans. Autumn Deterding chipped in six points, along with six rebounds, and Schyler Hoberty had five. Brielle Miller stuffed the stat sheet with four points, seven rebounds, and six steals.
On Tuesday evening the Trojans took on Ravenna, a top 10 team in Class D1, in the championship game. The Trojans made a nice rally in the late stages but ended up losing 42-35. Ravenna started out strong leading 13-6 after one period of play. In the second quarter, they doubled that lead as they went up 23-9 heading into the half.
In the third quarter, it was a back and forth affair as the Trojans found themselves down 35-20 heading to the fourth. In the fourth quarter, Cambridge used strong defense and a burst off offense to make things interesting. The Trojans got within eight with 4:57 remaining in the game, but the Blue Jays took the momentum back with a couple of baskets to seal the game.
Jalen Kent again had a solid game with 14 points and three steals to lead the way for Cambridge. Jacey Kent had six points and four assists. Autumn Deterding led the way on the glass with eight rebounds. The Trojans, now 4-4, will next be in action at home for their Holiday Tournament on Tuesday, December 28th at 2:30 P.M. when they battle Crawford.
