Hi-Line second, Arapahoe third at Cambridge Invite

CAMBRIDGE - All area golf teams gathered in Cambridge Tuesday for the first big invite tournament of the season and despite the bipolar weather, local golfers put strong performances together. With consistency, the Hi-Line boys finished second at the 17-team tournament, firing a 358 as all four scorers shot an 89 or 90.

Despite the cooler weather Tuesday, local athletes excelled and put forth more record-breaking performances at the Hi-Line Invite in Elwood Tuesday. The Cambridge girls team came up three points short of Loomis in the team standings and finished runner-up for the second-straight meet.

On a hot and windy afternoon, local athletes from four area schools put forth a number of great early-season performances at the Southern Valley Track & Field Invite Friday. Southern Valley’s Adi Hunt dominated in her final home invite, finishing first in all three sprint races as well as the long jump, where she reached a mark of 17-4.

KEARNEY - At the Class D Indoor Meet held by UNK Thursday, a number of local athletes opened their track season with solid marks and medals. In boys’ competitions, Arapahoe’s Grayson Koller took first in the 60 meters while teammate Hayden Sich was third in the 200.

Raiders fall at district final

KEARNEY - A fast start got the Medicine Valley boys basketball off to a lead in Wednesday’s district final contest against Archangels Catholic. But the Defenders’ length and trapping zone defense soon took over as they scored 45 of the next 54 points and ran away with a 52-32 victory.

Cedar Catholic stifles Southwest in State opener

The Southwest girls basketball team carried a great deal of confidence into their first State Basketball Tournament game Wednesday. But riding a 22-game win streak, the Roughriders’ offense fell flat at the hands of Cedar Catholic as the Roughriders played hard, but fell in the game by a final of 54-27.

Yutan pulls away late to turn back So Valley

YUTAN - The Southern Valley girls basketball team showed its championship fight and grit in Friday’s district final contest at Yutan, pushing eighth-seeded Yutan to the limit. But like a number of their defeats this season, the Eagles truggled to finish at the rim and that proved costly in a 5141 defeat, ending their season at 20-6.
