With resounding victories in their district final contests Friday and Saturday, the Southern Valley girls basketball and Maywood-Hayes Center boys basketball teams clinched berths at the State Tournament. Southern Valley defeated Amherst 54-33 Friday night before the Wolves rolled past Potter-Dix 60-21 on Saturday.

SOUTHERN VALLEY - At its district final Friday, the Southern Valley girls basketball team did what it’s successfully done all season. The Eagles dealt a knockdown blow in the opening quarter, then maintained that early lead to the finish of a 54-33 district championship victory over Amherst, clinching the Eagles’ second-straight berth at the State Tournament.

HAYES CENTER - In the Subdistrict D2-8 finals Thursday, the Maywood-Hayes Center boys basketball team overwhelmed Medicinr Valley in the opening half and coasted to a 73-50 victory to advance to the district finals.

MAYWOOD - Any suspense in the District D2-2 Final quickly dissipated Saturday as Maywood-Hayes Center held visiting Potter-Dix scoreless over the first 12 minutes of the game, built a 27-0 lead and rolled to a 60-21 victory, clinching a berth at the State Tournament.

Oxford Woman Sentenced for Conspiracy to Distribute Methamphetamine and Fentanyl

LINCOLN - United States Attorney Susan Lehr announced that Samantha Miller, 31, of Oxford, Nebraska, was sentenced Friday in federal court in Lincoln, Nebraska, for conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine and fentanyl. Senior United States District Court Judge John M. Gerrard sentenced Miller to 60 months’ imprisonment. There is no parole in the federal system. After Miller’s release from prison, she will begin a 5-year term of supervised release.

With the exception of a few days of “normal” February weather, we have been fortunate to enjoy some really nice not-so-normal-for-February days. Sure is nice to be able to go out with just a light jacket and not all bundled up in the insulated coveralls, stocking cap, heavy mittens, etc. But we do still worry about what all these above normal temps are going to do to our vegetation, i.e., the wheat in particular, the fruit trees, flowers, etc.
