Nebraska’s Civil War years topic of Historical Society Presentation

(February 27, 2024) – The wild and woolly first years of the Nebraska Territory is the subject of Nebraska historian Jeff Barnes’s presentation of “The Queen’s Road: Nebraska’s Bumpy Ride to Statehood” at the Curtis Community Center on Sunday, September 29, at 2 p.m. The program is presented by the Frontier County Historical Society and sponsored by Humanities Nebraska.

Local schools receives Healthy Home Team grant

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska has announced 100 Nebraska high schools as this year’s Healthy Home Team partners. A few schools in and around Medicine Valley, Maywood and Southern Valley will receive a $500 grant as partner schools, along with a team spirit sign to hang in their athletic facilities. This grant will support the schools’ efforts to promote health and well-being in their communities.

Clean indoor air act revisited

Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) is assisting cities and villages in the health district with education and inspections for the Clean Indoor Air Act. In 2008, Nebraska passed the Clean Indoor Air Act requiring indoor workplaces to be smoke-free as of June 1, 2009.The purpose of this act is to protect the public’s health from secondhand smoke by prohibiting smoking in public places and places of employment.

MCCOOK - In rolling to a 10-0 start without dropping a set, the Southwest volleyball team entered the McCook Invite without any real stressful moments this season. Sure, they’d trailed in a set a few times, but they’d never stared down anything remotely resembling defeat.
