The fire got about a half mile from town. Shafer says it was just across the road. Shafer reports they were on scene about 30-40 minutes for each fire. They were back in service before 11 pm. The lure of free land through the Homestead Act of 1862 brought many settlers to Nebraska in the late 1800s through the early 1900s. The Homestead Act was signed into law by President Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War. It promised up to 160 acres of surveyed public land to anyone who was over the age of 21 or a head of household and who was a U.S. citizen or legally declared their intent to become a U.S. citizen. Anyone who fought against or aided enemies of the United States was not eligible to claim land under this law.
