Edison American Legion member Charlie Pruitt and Robert Dyer manned the grills and spatulas to cook pancakes for the Pancake Feed held on Sunday in Edison. Members of the Arapahoe Fifth Grade Class are Adrienne North, Maggie Weatherwax, Keziah Goshert, Destry Hillebrand, Andrew Park, Danielle Eidson, Hannah Utterback, Jaden Smith, Jasmine Jones, Terri Hilker, Cameron Groves, Faith Pruitt, Cooper Schutz, Tanner Deisley, Kaylee Odell, Sierha Beck, and teacher Carman Williamson.

The Elwood Student Council recognized a student and staff manager who exemplifies “Pirate Pride.” Baskets of goodies were given to Lexie Remmenga and Deb Pickenpaugh. Fifteen Gosper County 4-H members finished their BB Gun project with the annual “County Shoot” on Saturday, March 9.

Virginia Rice was the winner of $200 in Chamber Bucks from the Chamber March promotion and Virginia donated the $200 to the Cambridge Food Pantry to help Wilsonville Women’s Society mission to support the Food Pantry.

25 Years Ago March 12, 1998 Up to 15 members of the 1997 championship Cornhusker football team will face the Southern Valley faculty team in a basketball contest this Sunday at Southern Valley. Lunch, raffles and autographs will also be part of the day.

Almena man arrested following Monday Pursuit near Beaver City

On Monday at 1:35 p.m., Furnas County Dispatch received information from Norton County, KS that a Norton County deputy was in pursuit of a vehicle on rural roads headed for Nebraska somewhere southeast of Beaver City. The Norton County deputy discontinued the pursuit somewhere near the Nebraska/Kansas line. A Furnas County deputy was dispatched to the area to attempt to locate the blue 2008 Ford Focus. At approximately 2:34 p.m., the Furnas County deputy found the vehicle in the area of RD 432 and RD 702 traveling at approximately 80 mph at which time the deputy attempted to stop the vehicle. The vehicle did not stop and a pursuit was initiated. Because of road conditions, the deputy lost sight of the vehicle. Deputies continued to search the area for the vehicle. At approximately 3:11 p.m., deputies found the vehicle abandoned in a field and the occupants had fled on foot. A perimeter was set up to contain possible suspects and Nebraska State Patrol was requested for assistance.

Accident south of Arapahoe

On Monday at 2:21 p.m., Furnas County deputies responded to a report of a twosemi accident near RD 721 and Hwy 283. A northbound cattle truck and a southbound house mover collided causing minor damage, however, the cattle hauler was unable to get off on the shoulder due to conditions and was blocking traffic for about 25 minutes. Special thanks to Arapahoe Fire for helping with traffic control due to all other deputies engaged in the pursuit at the same time.

Communications tower destroyed south of Oxford

On Saturday, the Furnas County Sheriff’s Office received a report that the communications tower south of Oxford, owned by Strayer Communications, had been toppled and completely destroyed. Upon investigation, preliminary findings indicated intentional damage to a guide wire anchor that resulted in complete structural failure of the tower causing it to fall to the east.
