Truth in Taxation Law Allows Citizen Involvement in the Property Tax Process

Body
By Guyla Mills CAMBRIDGE - The law known as the Property Tax Request Act or Truth in Taxation (LB 644) was passed by the Legislature in 2021 and goes into effect this year. Counties, cities, school districts and community colleges are now required to inform taxpayers by mail if they seek to raise the subdivision’s annual property tax by more than 2%, plus real growth. If the budget exceeds the 2% increase formula, taxpayers will receive a postcard detailing the increases and the location and time for a special hearing where the increase will be explained by a member of the subdivision and members of the public are given an opportunity to speak. Political subdivisions have until September 5 to notify the county clerk’s office of their proposed budgets and if they are required to participate in a county-wide special hearing.
