25 Years Ago April 10, 1997 Michael Allen Bunn, 28, of Stamford was killed in a one-vehicle accident Tuesday morning west of Orleans on Highway 89. The Beaver City Jaycees chapter is seeking new members.

Temporary Campfire Ban at Nebraska Lakes

Many SRAs, WMAs temporarily banning campfires; turkey hunters urged to use caution Due to drought conditions and extreme fire danger, many Nebraska state recreation areas and some wildlife management areas are temporarily banning campfires until further notice. Although everyone should be cautious when using fire throughout Nebraska, the list of areas with temporary closures includes: Southwest Region: Medicine Creek, Red Willow, Swanson, Enders, Sutherland and Buffalo Bill SRAs Southern Panhandle Region: Lake McConaughy, Lake Ogallala, Lake Minatare and Wildcat Hills State SRAs, and Ash Hollow State Historical Park Central Region: Sherman and Victoria Springs SRAs A temporary burn ban already is in place at Calamus SRA, under the authority of local offcials.

Oxford Post Office reumes window operations after nearly three-year closure

Window operations of the Oxford Post Offce closed in June of 2019 due to issues with the building. Now, nearly three years since the closure, services have resumed. In that time, the building has changed hands to local ownership and a renovation of the building was completed. Residents using the post offce boxes had to pick up their mail in Orleans for several months while work was completed on the building.

The Nebraska State Patrol continues to investigate a fatality crash that occurred on Highway 283 during response to the large fire southeast of Elwood. The crash occurred at approximately 5:10 p.m., when a Ford Expedition, driven by Phelps County Emergency Manager Justin Norris, with passenger Darren Krull, Chief of the Elwood Volunteer Fire Department, was struck head on by a truck hauling water, approximately eight miles north of Arapahoe on Highway 283.

Brockman Receives Grand Champion Intermediate Speaker

The Phelps-Gosper 4-H Public Speaking Contest was held on March 24 at the Phelps County Ag Center. Becky Schwartz served as the judge. Kara Brockman received Grand Champion Intermediate Speaker and Brooke Brockman received Grand Champion 4-H PSA. Kara and Brooke will represent Phelps-Gosper 4-H at the Nebraska State Speech contest on June 24 in Lincoln. Kara and Brooke attend Elwood Public School.
