Sheldon Johnsen, son of Scott and Shawna Johnsen of Curtis was the recipient of the Russell Covey award. Johnsen participated in the Harlan County Fair for 16 years and considers Harlan County his home away from home.

Aubree Warner, daughter of Amy and Darren Warner of rural Edison and Southern Valley 2020 graduate has received her American FFA Degree. This is the highest degree achievable in the National FFA organization.

Jorgenson Art Educator of the Year

Southern Valley High School art teacher Mrs. Rebecca Jorgenson was recently named the 2021 Nebraska Art Teachers Association Outstanding Art Educator of the Year. This is “awarded to an individual who meets exceptional standards of excellence and service in art education on local, state, and nationals levels.” It is given to a member of the Nebraska Art Teachers Association/ National Art Educators Association who spend at least .51 full time equivalent in art education.

Canteen Lady Sculpture Dedication – Norfolk Veterans Home

On Tuesday, August 17, a crowd gathered at the Norfolk Veterans Home for the dedication of the life-size bronze sculpture of a WWII Canteen Lady by Cambridge artist Sondra L. Jonson. Governor Pete Ricketts was the main speaker at the dedication and subsequent ribbon cutting. John Hilgert, Director of the Nebraska Department of Veterans Affairs, State Senator Mike Flood, Jerry Eisenhauer, Administrator of the Norfolk Veterans Home, Josh Moenning, Mayor of Norfolk and the artist joined the governor. Dan Benes, Commander of the Nebraska American Legion, Dave Salak, Adjutant of the Nebraska American Legion, and many other local leaders, veterans and their families were also in attendance.

AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY

Unit 199 of the American Legion Auxiliary met at the Community Building with 9 members present. After Presentation of the Colors, Pledge of Allegiance, Prayer and Preamble, the president called the meeting to order at 2:03 p.m. The minutes of the July meeting were read. Jo Lewis made a motion to approve the minutes as corrected; Barb seconded. The motion passed.

Tri Valley Medical Foundation Awards Scholarships to Area Medical Students

Body
Tri Valley Medical Foundation recently awarded scholarships totaling $15,400 to 28 area students who are pursuing careers in nursing and other medical fields. Tri Valley Medical Foundation applicants had wonderful career goals, outstanding scholastic records, and favorable recommendations from medical professionals and instructors. The Foundation is fortunate to be able to support these students in our service area to assist them in achieving their future career goals. Since the inception of this program, over $1,039,000 has been awarded.
