USDA offers additional assistance for certain producers through Coronavirus Food Assistance Program

Body
(Washington, D.C., January 15, 2021) — U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue announced the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) will provide additional assistance through the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program (CFAP), expanding eligibility for some agricultural producers and commodities as well as updating payments to accurately compensate some producers who already applied for the program. Producers who are now eligible and those who need to modify existing applications due to these updates can contact USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) between Jan. 19 and Feb. 26. Some of these changes are being made to align with the recently enacted Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021 while others are discretionary changes being made in response to ongoing evaluation of CFAP.-

Stay on Top of Cow Nutrition during Late Gestation

Body
It can be tempting to try to save some money by letting dry cows rough it on lowquality forage with little to no supplement, but this is not the time to skimp on nutrition. As a cow moves from mid to late gestation, her energy requirement increase 25% and her protein requirement increases 10%. During that last month prior to calving, the fetus is gaining about a pound a day. Research has shown that cows who are in a body condition score (BCS) of 4 or less at calving have decreased concentration of immunoglobulins in the colostrum compared to cows in a BCS of 5 to 6. Calves born to thin cows may be weak and slow to nurse, resulting in reduced consumption of colostrum and making them more susceptible to disease. Additionally, providing proper nutrition during late gestation helps prepare the cow for lactation and rebreeding. Points to consider:
