Cambridge School Board discusses preparation for school year

The Cambridge Board of Education met in regular session on Monday, July 12, 2021. Board Member Sally Farquhar was not preset for the meeting. Shortly after calling the meeting to order, the Board went into executive session to discuss personnel. After exiting executive session, the Board approved the General Fund and Building Fund claims.

Southwest School Board approves girls wrestling program

BARTLEY - The Southwest Board of Education met Monday to approve the addition of a girls wrestling program as well as some policy updates as suggested by the school’s attorneys. The Board discussed the addition of a girls’ wrestling team.

Wellness McCook Initiative Seeks Input from Community

Wellness McCook Initiative leaders are seeking information on physical activity improvement projects community members are currently planning. The Initiative members are from a variety of organizations working together to bundle physical activity capital improvement projects, in an effort to improve the overall health of McCook.

Elwood School Board sets lunch and activity pass prices

ELWOOD - The Elwood Board of Education met Monday to go over and approve a number of policy updates as well as to set activity pass prices and lunch prices for the upcoming school year. There were a number of policy updates approved by the Board, but Superintendent Daren Hatch said most were boiler plate changes as recommended by the school’s attorneys.

Local athletes compete in summer hoops

Nebraska Corn Processing has sponsored a club basketball team for this summer featuring boys basketball players from Cambridge, Arapahoe, Southern Valley, and McCook. The team is coached by Clay Shepard and Bronson Wood of Cambridge. The team played in their first tournament last weekend in Hays, KS. They went 3-2 and finished 3rd in the Sizzlin’ Summer Shootout.

Cambridge announces winners of Girls Athletic Award, Butch and Dick Luther Award

The Girls Athletic Award was established in 1977 by the Cambridge Jaycettes to honor a graduating female athlete. It is now sponsored y the Cambridge Rotary Club. The award is determined by a point system based on scholastic ability, athletic ability and the vote of the female “C” Club members considerign the merits of the cooperation, popularity and leadership of a graduating female athlete. The athlete must have participated in a minimum of two sports during her junior and senior years. The winner receives a medal, $150 scholarship and her name on the Outstanding Female Athlete plaque. The winner of the 2021 Girls Athletic Award is Chloe Besler.

Arapahoe School Board discusses permanent superintendent search, use of federal grant money

ARAPAHOe – The Arapahoe-Holbrook Board of education held their monthly meeting on June 14 with all six board members present. District staff in attendance were Dr. George Griffith, Superintendent, Rudy Perez, Principal, Cassie Hilker, Board Secretary, Brian Gegg, Incoming Interim Superintendent, Buck Franssen, Maintenance Director, and Heidi Thomas, AeA Representative. Others present were Matt Fisher, First National Capital Markets, Cynthia Huff, Nebraska Rural Community Schools Association, and Guyla Mills, Valley Voice.

Locals push East to 35-6 win in Scottsbluff

Cambridge’s Kyle Borland (pictured playing center) and ethan Sides along with Keegan Benson from Arapahoe and Carter Bose and Clayton Berry (pictured right) from Southern Valley all played for the east All-Star team in the West Nebraska All- Star Football Game this weekend. Carter Bose was named Offensive MVP after the game. Bose and Berry connected for 2 touchdown passes and Bose ran for a third touchdown, and the east team won the game 35-6.

Local athletes, coaches take part in Shrine Bowl

Carter Bose of Southern Valley and Nolan Meyers of Arapahoe were selected to play for the South Team in the Nebraska Shrine Bowl Game. Bose held the snap and Meyers blocked for the sole points scored by the South in a 3-10 loss to the North. Dustin Kronhoffman of Arapahoe was an assistant coach for the South.
