OVERTON - After a frustrating triangular on Tuesday that included a three-set loss to North Platte St. Pat’s, the Cambridge volleyball team hit the road again and clobbered fourth-ranked Overton, sweeping a 25-16, 25-14, 25-23 victory to improve to 6-2 this season.

SOUTHERN VALLEY - For a while Friday, a cross-county rivalry between Cambridge and Southern Valley played out like one as the Eagles hung in with opportunistic plays on defense and kep within striking distance.

TRENTON - The Arapahoe volleyball team battled its way through a challenging triangular and tournament last week, but dropped each of the five matches it played as the Warriors fell to 1-7 this season.

Tuesday night brought us to the Lexington Invitational on the Johnson Lake Golf Course. We looked good as we battled the hilly terrain and bigger schools. I really appreciated how our girls responded to the hills. They are getting closer to the steady and confident runners that Coach Stephens and I envision for them. Whitney Dickau and Natalie Malcom led our effort again. They each ran this course two years ago, with Whitney running a minute faster this time out and Natalie over two minutes faster. Dallas Weitzel was our third runner. This was her first time on this course, but she ran well and even ran faster than her time from Cambridge last week on what is a flatter course. Payton Muegerl was also running this course for the first time. Payton persevered and showed grit running against a mix of runners from Class D up to Class A. Genesee Knackstedt and Grace Schimmels ran neck and neck the last half of the race to finish within five seconds of each other. Lauren Hickey, Alayna Moore, and Katlynn Parker all competed with Alayna and Katlynn bettering their time on this course from two years ago when we last ran it. In the JH races, Olivia Wall and Kara Brockman both ran well in their 3K. Both of these girls have high expectations for themselves and are working to meet them. In our boys’ race, Connor Edwards, Christian Maurer, Kane Cochrane, and Cooper Knackstedt all competed well. This is a fun group to be around. I was impressed to see us attacking hills towards the end of the 3K.

KEARNEY - The Cambridge girls golf team enjoyed great weather and their best rounds of the year at the Kearney Catholic Awarii Challenge last week. Macy Jones (pictured above) finished 11th with a round of 91 while Jordyn Cross shot a 111 and Emma Rasmussen finished with a 118. Cambridge competed at Gothenburg Tuesday and travels to Minden Friday.

LOOMIS - Mixed in with a pair of defeats to Bertrand and another to Franklin, the Hi-Line volleyball team picked up its third and fourth wins of the season last week, defeating Cozad in a triangular Thursday before beating Maxwell at the Loomis 9/11 Tournament on Saturday.

IMPERIAL - The Cambridge girls cross country team took third place and had two top 15 medalists at the Chase County Invite last Thursday. Brenna Deterding led the Trojans with a eighth place finish and Rachel Harris was 15th.

EUSTIS - With a big-play rushing attack that gained steam as the game went on, the Hi-Line football team erased an early 10-point deficit and rolled away to a 44-24 victory over visiting Sutherland Friday.

BARTLEY - The Southwest football team held its home opener Friday when the Roughriders hosted visiting Red Cloud. Offense proved tough to come by for Southwest as the Warriors controlled the game with defense and rolled away with a 38-0 victory, dropping Southwest to 0-2 while improving to 3-0.

The Southern Valley/Alma Saints softball team watched the game slip away early and couldn't recover in a 13-5 loss to Cozad on Thursday. The Saints lost despite out-hitting Cozad nine to six.
