LOOMIS - As the saying goes, “second verse, same as the first.” The Cambridge football team hit the road for the first round of the Class D2 playoff Thursday, making a second trip to Loomis this season. Just like the first matchup, things got sideways for the Trojans in the first half and they couldn’t dig out of the hole in a 66-30 defeat that ended their season at 5-4.

Defenses dominated the match, but the middle duo of Kyra and Annika Nelms carried the water for the Roughriders, posting 20 and 15 kills, respectively. “We have worked a lot on not only mixing up the shots, but moving them around where they’re attacking from,” Southwest Coach Kim Barnett said, noting the twin sisters did a good amount of swinging from the pins Tuesday night.

BARTLEY - An intense night of competition saw three teams’ seasons end at the Subdistrict D1-11 Tournament at Southwest Monday night. Medicine Valley led much of the opening set, but Hi-Line rallied for a 25-22 win, then completed a sweep with 25-16 and 25-18 wins in sets two and three in the opening match.

After rolling into subdistricts on a three-game win streak, the Southern Valley volleyball team fell in the D110 opener against Axtell to close their season at 10-20. Playing without their leading hitter, Tori Bose, the Eagles had other players step up, but were unable to keep pace with the Wildcats in a 25-18, 25-19, 25-14 defeat.

MCCOOK - The two-time defending league champion Southwest volleyball team wasn’t able to achieve a threepeat, but after a frustrating loss to Cambridge in Monday’s semifinals, the Roughriders bounced back with a sweep of Maywood-Hayes Center in Tuesday’s consolation match to finish third.
