TRENTON - Both the Maywood/Hayes Center girls and boys basketball teams surged through a busy and challenging week as they looked to collect mometum for the looming postseason. The MHC girls cruised through three wins in five days, cushing Mullen, 61-37, Hershey, 73-50, and Hitchcock County, 73-39.

ALMA - Houston Billeter scored 12 of his game-high 29 in the fourth quarter and led sixth-seeded Southwest to a consolation win over fifthseeded Hi-Line to close out the RPAC Tournament Friday in Alma. Southwest improved to 7-10 while the Bulls fell to 8-11 this season.

Roughriders first, Eagles third at Amherst Invite

AMHERST - The Southwest girls claimed another team title and the Southern Valley/Arapahoe girls were third at the 22-team Amherst Invite Saturday. Rylan Custard and Ambie Custard each took first and remained unbeaten for the Roughriders while Madelyn Tryon also earned an individual title.

ARAPAHOE - The Southern Valley wrestling team finished runner-up at the 14team Darrell Barnes Invite in Arapahoe. Cambridge was sixth, Hi-Line took 11th and Arapahoe was 12th in the team standings.

Wolves’ comeback falls short in title game MCCOOK - In one of the more entertaining girls basketball championship games the league has seen, East top-seeded Southwest outlasted West top seed Maywood-Hayes Center in the tournament championship Saturday, 61-57. The Roughriders, which won their 16th-straight contest after their lone loss to the Wolves in December, kept building big leads while MHC kept knocking them down.

HEBRON - Southwest was first and Southern Valley/Arapahoe was fourth at the Thayer Central Invite last week. Southwest’s Capri Sayer, Rylan Custard, Ambie Custard and Madelyn Tryon each took first place for the Roughriders while Jasmine Lang, Aubrie Seybold and Alyssa Koch each medaled as well. For Southern ValleyArapahoe, Laney Becker took first and Hayley Serfontein, Natalie Breinig, Cydney Carlson, Brooke Lentz and Eelena Lee each medaled as well.

The East top-seeded Southwest girls basketball team rolled past eighth-seeded Medicine Valley in Saturday’s first round RPAC Tournament game, 46-18. The Roughriders scored 18 points in the opening quarter and stifled the Raiders while building a 31-5 lead at the half.

The sixth-seeded Southwest boys basketball team pulled off an upset in the first round, rallying from 13 down in the fourth quarter to knock off third-seeded Cambridge, 69-65. The Roughriders trailed 59-46 through three, but outscored the Trojans 23-6 in the fourth to claim the victory.

CAMBRIDGE - In a team race that went to the wire, Southern Valley edged Cambridge, 152.5-149, to claim the RPAC Championship Saturday at the conference tournament held in Cambridge. Southern Valley medaled nine wrestlers while the Trojans medaled eight.
Just like they did in the team standings, Cambridge and Southern Valley battled on the mat throughout Saturday’s RPAC Wrestling Tournament with Southern Valley emerging as the conference champion by 3.5 points over Cambridge. Pictured above are Southern Valley’s Sam Bantam and Cambridge’s Carter Hanes, who squared off in the 150-pound finals.
