KEARNEY - For the second-straight year, the Maywood-Hayes Center girls basketball team battled Elgin Public/Pope John in a backand-forth battle for a trip to the State Tournament. And for the secondstraight year, the Wolfpack got the better of the Wolves with a 51-44 district final victory that propelled EPPJ to the State Tournament.

Cambridge offense stalls in district final loss

LITCHFIELD - After a 5432 setback in Thursday’s Subdistrict final at Dundy County-Stratton, the Cambridge boys basketball team earned itself a trip to a district final Saturday via wild card. But against another of the top teams in Class D1, the Trojans’ offense was suffocated by an active zone defense as Ansley-Litchfield rolled away to a 46-23 win to clinch a State Tournament berth.

No doubt, those words echoed for members of the Southern Valley girls basketball team as they prepared for last Thursday's subdistrict final against Alma, a team they'd battle for the third time in 22 days. Southern Valley had already handed the Cardinals two of their three losses ''It is hard to beat a team 3 times' was posted on the whiteboard in the locker room before the game,' Southern Valley Coach Richard McDonald said.

MAYWOOD - A new night and a new opponent, but the Subdistrict final result was almost identical to the first round for top-seeded Maywood-Hayes Center at the Girls D1-11 Tournament last Thursday. Two days after a 66-22 win over Hi-Line in the first round, the Wolves thoroughly beat Brady (13-11) 62-20 in Thursday’s final, improving to 21-2 on the season while advancing to a district final matchup Friday against Elgin/ Pope John.

Cambridge downs Alma, falls to Chase County

CAMBRIDGE - With a big third quarter, the Cambridge boys basketball team avenged a loss to Alma from the RPAC Tournament with a 57-55 win Friday night at home. The Cardinals led early and maintained a 27-24 advantage at the half, but Cambridge scored 18 third-quarter points to move in front, 42-38, going to the fourth.
