ARAPAHOE - It was a highly-successful day of competition for four local wrestling teams as two area squads tied for the team title and six individuals captured first in their weight brackets at the Darrell Barnes Invite in Arapahoe Saturday. Arapahoe and Cambridge finished tied for the team title with 123.5 points each and Hi-Line and Southern Valley both finished in the top half of the standings, taking fifth and sixth with 97.5 and 93 points, respectively.

CURTIS - The Southwest wrestling team medaled four of its five wrestlers and finished seventh at the 18-team Medicine Valley Invite Friday. The Roughriders’ Mitchel Stritt came away with a tounament championship, earning four victories along the way.

MCCOOK - In a methodical, half-court affair, the Maywood-Hayes Center boys basketball team had enjoyed the lead through much of the first three quarters of Saturday night’s RPAC Championship game. But after a three-point barrage from Alma, the Wolves found themselves trailing early in the fourth quarter.

The Arapahoe bowling team is closing out its regular season in anticipation of next week’s distict meet at lexington. The Warriors squared off with Southern Valley in a dual last week and posted a 21-0 victory in the girls matchup and a 12-9 victory in the boys.

The Medicine Valley girls basketball team exploded to a lead in the first half and built to to nearly 50 points before in the second half before taking a 63-18 win at Hi-Line last week. the Raiders outscored the Bulls 44-6 in the first half and led 57-8 to the fourth before Hi-Line enjoyed a 10-point quarter to close the margin a bit.

With a 16-point fourth quarter, the Hi-Line boys basketball team escaped past Medicine Valley last week, posting a 55-47 victory, pushing over .500 with their third-straight victory. The game was tied at 39 heading to the fourth, but the Bulls got five points from Ryker Evans, who led the team with 19, and five more from Judah Niemeier in the final period to get to the finish.

CURTIS - The 2024 Republican Plains Activities Conference Basketball Tournament opened play Saturday with first round games in the East played at Medicine Valley High School in Curtis. The Southern Valley girls certainly didn’t need a 40-point morning from Ann Bose in Saturday’s 64-28 triumph over seventh-seeded Bertrand, but they got one anyway.

Two weeks after the two needed overtime to settle a regular season result, secondseeded Cambridge leaned on its defense and shut down seventh-seeded Southwest for a 55-30 victory in Saturday’s first round. Southwest countered to close within 12-8 after a quarter after trailing 10-0 to start, but the Trojans dominated the middle quarters.

The Cambridge and Maywood-Hayes Center boys basketball teams both advanced to the RPAC semifinals with victories in Tuesday night’s quarterfinal round. The Wolves improved to 13-2 with a 60-34 triumph over Hitchcock County.

Of three four local RPAC teams to advance to the girls tournament quarterfinals, two kept their hopes of a championship alive Monday. Southern Valley and Maywood-Hayes Center each took victories in their quarterfinal contests and will play in Thursday’s semifinal contests.
