BENKELMAN - The top two seeds - Dundy County-Stratton and Hitchcock County - in the Subdistrict D1-12 Tournament advanced to Thursday’s final meaning the season has ended for three area basketball teams.

A strong opening quarter propelled Overton to a 63-47 victory over Southern Valley in Monday’s subdistrict tournament opener, ending the Eagles’ season at 4-20. Overton scored 19 in the first eight minutes and led the Eagles 19-8 to the second.

OMAHA - Over five intense days, 18 local athletes competed at the State Wrestling Tournaments, held separately for the first time for boys and girls, in Omaha. At the girls tournament, Southwest’s Ambie Custard capped her career with a State Title while her sister Rylan Custard finished third.

Three area girls basketball teams moved within one victory of reaching next week’s State Basketball Tournament last week. Maywood-Hayes Center and Southern Valley advanced to Class C2 district finals and will both make long road trips in advance of Friday’s district finals tilts.

CURTIS - Both the topseeded Medicine Valley boys basketball team and the second-seeded Southwest Roughriders advanced into semifinal action Tuesday at the Subdistrict D2-8 Tournament in Curtis. Medicine Valley cruised past winless Brady, 60-36, despite some sluggish moments offensively.

SUTHERLAND - Two Medicine Valley wrestlers got within a win of reaching the State Tournament, but the team’s season ended at the D-4 District Tournament in Sutherland. Both Hunter Koetter (144) and Colton Koetter (215) won a pair of matches and reached the consolation semifinals Saturday, but finished a victory short of the State Tournament.

BARTLEY - The Southwest boys basketball team found just enough offense to tip a pair of home games their way, defeating Axtell, 64-60, on Friday before taking down Wallace, 68-64, in a makeup game Monday afternoon.

The Hi-Line girls basketball team picked up its fourth win of the season while the boys’ upset bid of the Bobcats came up short at South Loup Friday. In the girls’ contest, Hi-Line rolled to a 46-27 victory over South Loup to take their fourth victory of the season.
