E. coli bacteria detected in Cottonmill & Johnson Lake

KEARNEY- Cottonmill Park Swim Lake and Johnson Lake has tested positive for E. coli bacteria above the riskbased guidelines. When E. coli bacteria levels test above 235 colonies/100 ml a Health Alert is not issued. However, conditions are at a higher risk to human health when swimming.

Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) encourages you to check your blood pressure regularly to know your risk for health problems. Blood pressure is the pressure of blood pushing against the walls of your arteries. Arteries carry blood from your heart to other parts of your body. Blood pressure normally rises and falls throughout the day, but it can damage your heart and cause health problems if it stays high for a long time.

TVHS Auxiliary awards nursing scholarships

The Cambridge Memorial Hospital Auxiliary met May 21, 2024 in the Tri Valley Health System Republican River Room with lunch provided by TVHS Volunteer Services. Sixteen members answered roll call. Minutes of the March, 2024 meeting were read and approved, followed by reports from the treasurer, president, Thrift Shop Cochair, Volunteer Coordinator, Foundation Director Jamie Vontz and CEO Clay Jordan.

Hastings College announces Scott Scholars

Thanks to the addition of the Walter Scott, Jr. Community Leadership Challenge and the continued support and investment of the Suzanne and Walter Scott Foundation, the 2024-25 Scott Scholars class at Hastings College has nearly doubled from previous years and includes 15 students from Nebraska and Colorado.

Mystery of Cambridge’s Statue of Liberty: Partly Solved?

At the intersection of Patterson St. and Nasby St., or Highway 47 and Highway 6/34, there once stood a re-creation of the Statue of Liberty. The statue, made of concrete similar to the Civil War Soldier that greets you at the entrance to the Fairview Cemetery, was created by local artist Robert “Bob” Danfield (June 10th, 1874 - March 1st, 1958). Her fate, and especially location, has been the subject of much speculation in the town of Cambridge and has also inspired many generations of ‘treasure hunters’ in the area. Her location will likely remain just as mysterious as it ever was, but its fate could now be more clear.

Chadron State College has announced the undergraduate students qualifying for the Spring 2024 President’s List. The list consists of students with a 4.0 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
