Southern Valley teammates hold End of Year Breakfast

Body
The Southern Valley TeamMates were about 75 strong at their End of Year Breakfast! They met to celebrate the end of a great year and recognize their 8 seniors who recently graduated. Three of those seniors received TeamMates scholarships from the National Office to help with their education expenses. The chapter has grown to 42 matches this year, but still have another 23 kids who are signed up and waiting for a mentor to volunteer. If you have 30 minutes a day during the school year to meet with a student and play a game of UNO, we want YOU! Find out more or apply online at www.teammates.org to come join the fun and make a difference in our community

Horn Fly control methods for pastured cattle

Body
By Erin Laborie, Livestock Systems Extension Educator The horn fly is a major pest of pasture and rangeland cattle in Nebraska and throughout the U. S. Once horn fly numbers get above 200 flies per animal, cattle alter grazing patterns and behavior, reducing milk production and weight gain. In Nebraska, horn flies can be present on cattle well into September and early October, with thousands of flies per animal. Now is the time to develop or re-evaluate a horn fly management plan for 2024.

Southern Valley Shooters Join USA Clay Target League

Body
The Southern Valley Jr. Shooters 2024 Spring Trap season looks quite different than it ever has. This year the SV Jr. Shooters board voted to join the USA Clay Target League. This league has teams in all the lower 48 states which puts us into the Nebraska State High School Clay Target League. This is a relatively new league and currently there are only 6 Nebraska schools that compete, but there are 110 competitors. Southern Valley has 37 athletes registered, and are 3 weeks into league competition and currently have three shooters in the top 10. They decided to join this league for numerous reasons, the two main reasons being coaches felt the kids deserved better opportunities and needed a driving force to improve their skills. They felt it was important to join the league in it’s infancy versus waiting until it grew bigger, which they anticipate it to grow quickly. Prior to this year they have never competed before going to the Cornhusker State Trap in Doniphan which consists of over 2,500 athletes from 5 states; coaches felt these athletes needed more competition and overall skill and score improving versus practicing for 6 weeks for just one competition. What they are doing now is 2-3 weeks of practice, 6 weeks of competition, and one day of competing at the league state competition which will be in Doniphan on June 8th, 2024.
