ARAPAHOE – After the passage of LB 243 that put a cap on property tax during the 2023 Legislative Session, school districts across the state are grappling with managing budgets.

The Curtis City Council granted permission to begin fundraising for a new pool. After multiple meetings, including two public input meetings, the Curtis pool committee requested that the city council approve moving forward with option 5, an estimated $3.9 million investment.

Turnout for the primary election held Tuesday was about a quarter of registered voters in the area. In local contested races, Kent Lehmann advanced with the Republican nomination in the Frontier County Commissioner’s race for the District 1 seat, defeating Doug Houser and Randy Sheffield.

MCCOOK – Police Sergeant Michael Jordan is being sworn in this week as Frontier County Sheriff. Jordan, who leaves his current job later this month, will assume the sheriff position fulltime on May 28 in Curtis.

The Arapahoe City Council met on Monday, May 7 at 7:30 pm for their regular meeting immediately following a CRA meeting. There was some brief discussion on the pine needle mulch that has been ordered for the new planters downtown.

Southern Valley looking at roof and flooring repairs The Southern Valley Board of Education met for their regular meeting on Monday, May 13 at 7:30 pm. The board heard from Alyson Adams, 2024 graduate and art student who is a congressional art contest winner.

There was some discussion about the state of the lights at the baseball field during the Monday, May 13 meeting of the Oxford Board of Trustees.

Special recognition awards were presented April 30 at the Student Awards Gala at Central Community College-Hastings.

(Grand Island, Neb.) – Central Community College-Grand Island honored about 380 graduate candidates May 10 during its 38th annual commencement ceremony.

(Hastings, Neb.) – Central Community College-Hastings honored about 345 graduate candidates May 10 during its 57th annual commencement ceremony. Fifty-one of the degree candidates achieved an accumulative grade-point average of 3.75 or higher during their college career and graduated with honors.
