CITY CODES C = Cozad; F = Farnam; G = Gothenburg; L = Lexington; O = Overton Nineteen (19) Dawson County 4-H members participated in the 2026 4-H Public Speaking Contest Monday, March 23, at the Dawson County Extension Office in Lexington. Bluetooth Headphones, courtesy of county sponsor KRVN, were presented to the high individual in each of the three speech divisions and the top PSA entry. All 4-H members received $10 for participating in the contest, courtesy of Dawson County Banks. County ribbons were also presented to the participants.

Free Classes to Focus on Medicare

(Lexington, Neb.) – Central Community College-Lexington will offer two free classes on Medicare. The first, “Welcome to Medicare,” will focus on what Medicare costs and covers, when and how to enroll and the difference between a Medicare supplement and Medicare Advantage.

Jurjens headed to American Legion Auxiliary Girls State

Shelby Rae Jurjens of Eustis has been seleced to attend American Legion Auxiliary Cornhusker Girls State May 31-June 6, 2026, on the campus of the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. Jurjens was selected based on selection criteria through auxiliary unit adn or high school Jurjens will study local, county and state government processes in this nonpartisan political learning experience. Every spring, the American Legion Auxiliary Girls State Program provides approximately 25,000 young women with a hands-on educational opportunity designed to instruct tomorrow’s leaders in the privileges and duties of responsible citizenship.

The Southern Valley FFA Chapter was recognized as a GOLD Level Premier Chapter — the highest ranking a chapter can receive through the National Chapter Award program! On top of that, they were named the 1st place chapter in the Growing Leaders division of the Model of Excellence… for the SECOND year in a row!! This recognition is based on their National Chapter Award application, written by the officer team, highlighting all of the activities, events, and opportunities the members have been involved in over the past year. .

Elwood at State Speech in Class D2

These Elwood girls did well at the State Speech meet. Aliah Nelson competed in Persuasive. Kara Brockman competed and medaled 4th in Persuasive, 3rd in Extemp, and she and Lauren Cunningham medaled 5th in Duet! 37 Class D2 teams had qualifiers at State, and Elwood finished 7th as a team.
