Cambridge Museum is asking for your help on the 702 Fire Project

The Cambridge Museum is working on collecting memories and stories from the 2022 702 Fire. The stories of your experiences will be stored at the Cambridge Museum. A secondary copy hoped to be created and also made available at the Butler Memorial Library. Our future generations will be able to look back on, reflect, and reference when wanting not only to know more about the event itself but also about the people who witnessed and experienced the fire.

UNMC welcomed area students in fall semester

The University of Nebraska Medical Center welcomed 1,273 new students this fall as they made a commitment to the health professions and began educational programs in Omaha, Lincoln, Kearney, Scottsbluff and Norfolk. Students are enrolled in programs for medicine, nursing, pharmacy, dentistry, allied health professions and graduate studies.

Downer, Gerlach selected for 2022 All-State Chorus

Each year, approximately 3000 of the best high school musicians in the state audition for the Nebraska All-State Band, Chorus, Jazz Band and Orchestra which are sponsored by the Nebraska Music Education Association. Selection as a member of one of these groups is one of the highest music honors attainable in Nebraska. Mr. Lynn Hall, Director of Choral Affairs for the Nebraska Music Education Association, is please to announce that Leah Downer (Soprano II), daughter of Derek and Maria Downer, and Micah Gerlach (Tenor II), son of Cody and Ashley Gerlach, will be amoung the 440 students selected to be a part of the 2022 All-State Chorus. Guest conductor for the group will be Dr. Sandra Snow, Professor of Choral Conducting and Music Education at the Michigan State University College of Music. The chorus will rehearse Wednesday, November 16th through Friday, November 18th on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus, the host site of the NMEA Conference/Clinic. A final public concert will be held on Friday, November 18th, 4:30 p.m. at the Lied Center for the Performing Arts on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus.

Beaver City Residents to Determine use of Sales tax Funds on nov 8

BEAVER CITY – On November 8, almost two decades after the first sales and use tax initiative was approved, voters will determine if the current program continues or will be replaced. A ballot measure was passed on November 2, 2004 to establish an Economic Development Program and impose a sales and use tax of 1%.

16th Annual nebraska Kids Fitness & nutrition Day

The 16th annual Nebraska Kids Fitness and Nutrition Day (NKFND) was held in McCook on Wednesday, October 5th at the McCook Community College Peter and Dolores Graff Event Center with around 280 fourth grade students. The event was also hosted at Perkins County Schools in Grant on September 29th with approximately 160 fourth grade students attending the Mountain Time Zone event. Students came from across the nine counties in Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) to participate in this fitness and nutrition event.

The Sweet Adelines concert “Music, The Spice of Life” was held Saturday October 22 in Arapahoe at the high school with special guest Ginger tenBensel performing. They also performed at Kearney’s Merryman Performing Art Center that evening with special guests UNK Nebraskats. The MPCC Theatre in North Platte hosted the group on October 23.

Erin Laborie, Nebraska Extension Educator Baling of soybean residue after harvest has gained popularity again this fall due to higher hay prices and forage shortages following drought. Further, delayed corn harvests are also slowing stalks residue baling and stalks grazing. According to the USDA AMS Nebraska Direct Hay sales report, large round cornstalks bale values are $110 per ton versus $80 per ton for large round soybean residue bales. So, the question arises, do soybean residue bale values justify raking and baling costs, reduced soil protection and nutrient removal?

USDA Provides Payments of Nearly $800 Million in Assistance to Help Keep Farmers Farming

USDA has outlined steps to administer up to an additional $500 million in payments to benefit the following distressed borrowers: •USDA will administer $66 million in separate automatic payments, using COVID-19 pandemic relief funds, to support up to 7,000 direct loan borrowers who used FSA’s disaster-set-aside option during the pandemic to move their scheduled payments to the end of their loans. •USDA is also initiating two case-by-case processes to provide additional assistance to farm loan borrowers.

Southwest Qualifies for National Land Judging Competition

Students and instructors from 29 high schools met near Gering to compete in State Land Judging Oct. 19. The North Platte Natural Resources District (NRD) partnered with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) to host the annual competition. Southwest placed 3rd as a team and qualified for the National Land Judging in Oklahoma City this spring.

Students judged the “Wildcat Hills” area in Banner County, NE. The North Platte NRD office hosted the contest attended by schools who had qualified from all regional NRD contests. This is the first time Southwest has qualified for the National Land Judging Contest to be held in May 2023.
