John Walburn, M.D., Among Children’s Hospital & Medical Center Pediatric Legend Honorees

Body
Children’s Hospital & Medical Center recently paid tribute to extraordinary individuals who have dedicated their lives to delivering the very best health care to children. John Walburn, M.D., was among the five honorees who were recognized at a Pediatric Legends banquet on Thursday, Sept. 15, 2022, acknowledging their career of commitment to improving the life of every child through medical innovation, collaboration, accountability, respect and excellence. Although he had planned to become a pharmacist like his grandfather, Dr. Walburn was instead drawn to medicine, being mentored by his grandfather’s friend, an “old fashioned” GP in Cambridge, Neb. John spent many years working in Omaha’s underserved communities, as well as teaching the next generation of medical practitioners. Over the years, Dr. Walburn saw many families – and generations of families – treating newborns to late teens and from every walk of life. His approach to putting patients and parents at ease was to treat everyone with respect. He considers himself blessed to have been in a profession where not only can you help people, but you can keep learning your entire life. For more than 70 years, Children’s has been the place for families to come from far and wide to benefit from the care and expertise of physicians, scientists and leaders who are dedicated to improving the lives of children. Some of the region’s most beloved and talented physicians and scientists hold a special place in the hearts of parents and the children they serve, and they have earned the respect of their peers. Individuals selected as Pediatric Legends are those whose work will live on and impact the lives of children for years to come. We recognize their hard work and commitment, and most of all, a love for children and doing what’s right for children. In addition to Dr. Walburn, the 2022 Pediatric Legends include Jane A. Kugler, M.D.; John C.
