Veterans Day is an annual federal holiday on November 11th to honor all those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. The holiday originated from Armistice Day and is a day to thank living veterans for their service and sacrifices Because it is a federal holiday, many businesses are closed and mail delivery is suspended.

Six area vocalists among 747 Students from 124 Nebraska Schools selected for 2025 Nebraska All-State Ensembles

LINCOLN – The Nebraska Music Education Association (NMEA) is pleased to announce the high school students selected to participate in the 2024 Nebraska All-State Ensembles. Each year over 2,000 of the best musicians in the state in grades 9-12 audition for placement in one of four available ensembles. Selection in one of these groups is one of the highest musical honors attainable in Nebraska.

National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week

Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) is joining partners across the country to recognize National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week, October 19th to 25th, by raising awareness about the dangers of lead exposure and how families can take simple steps to keep children safe.
On Oct 21st., these new Arapahoe Elementary Leadership Team members attended the annual Elementary Leadership Conference on the UNK campus.

Time for Flu Shots and COVID-19 Shots

Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) encourages residents to get their flu shots and COVID-19 shot updates to protect against respiratory illnesses this winter. SWNPHD has seen an increase of COVID-19 cases over the past few weeks, following the late summer wave of infections seen across most of the country. Last year SWNPHD gave over 400 flu shots and 125 COVID shots, with pharmacies and clinics giving many more as well.

Here it is, the tail end of October! And Thanksgiving is just 4 quick weeks after that, with Christmas another 4 weeks later!! Where has this year gone?? The gauge here on The Hill showed .30 Monday night. Nice shower, but not too conducive to getting the fall harvest in the bins.
