CAMBRIDGE - The Cambridge girls basketball team began to pull away from the Southwest Roughriders in the two teams’ annual regular season showdown, but the Roughriders were not going to have it. The Roughriders closed out Friday’s contest on a 23-7 run to erase a 10-point deficit and leave town with a 39-33 victory.

Arapahoe and Cambridge competed in the Dundy Country Stratton on Jan. 8. Cambridge earned 132 points to finish in second behind McCook with 187.5 points. Arapahoe was fourth in 107 points with Sutherland finished third with 120.5 points. The other competing teams, respectively, were Brady, 105; Medicine Valley, 97.5; Wauneta-Palisade, 38; Dundy County Stratton, 30; and Paxton, 7.

SUMNER - A pair of big first quarters for the Hi-Line boys basketball team’s opponents last week led to losses for the Bulls against both Maywood-Hayes Center and Sumner-Eddyville-Miller. Tuesday, MHC put up 23 points in the opening quarter and 16 more in the second en route to building a 39-28 halftime lead, one the Wolves coasted on to a 75-63 victory.

SUMNER - Taking on some of the best teams in the region, the Hi-Line girls basketball team dropped a pair of contests last week to one-loss foes, falling 61-30 at Maywood-Hayes Center on Tuesday and 49-29 at Sumner-Eddyville-Miller on Thursday.

Southwest, Cambridge and Hi-Line competed at the Amherst Invite hosted Saturday, Jan. 9. Southwest finished third with 142.5 points behind Amherst, 191, and Plainview, 155, respective. Neilgh-Oakdale finished fourth, 124, with Arcadia/Loup City, 91, and AnselmoMerna, 70, finishing in fifth and sixth. Cambridge earned 69.5 points for seventh. The remaining schools, in order of finish, were Kenesaw, 55.5; Sumner-Eddyville-Miller, 48.5; South Loup, 48; Medicine Valley, 43; Shelton, 42.5; Hi-Line, 39; Fullerton, 38; Doniphan Trumbull, 20; Amherst JV, 9, and Overton, 7.5.

ARAPAHOE - The Arapahoe girls basketball team twice dug themselves in holes last weekend, but twice proceeded to dig themselves out, only to see their efforts come up short. The Warriors trailed by 12 at the half at Medicine Valley Thursday, but rallied within a couple possessions late before falling 50-43.

ARAPAHOE - Consistent scoring proved problematic for the Arapahoe boys basketball team last week as the Warriors lost a halftime lead at Medicine Valley Friday, then got overrun by visiting Loomis on Saturday as they fell to 3-8 this season.

Southern Valley’s girls and boys basketball teams have shut down the competition this week winning 5 of 5 games. This winning streak is led by Boses on both teams. Freshman starter, Ann Bose, led her team to victory over the Franklin Flyers, Bertrand Vikings, and Hitchock County Falcons scoring 12, 27, and points respectively. The Eagles played a tight battle against the Flyers, sealing a victory in overtime with a 35-34 win. Although the Eagles had some difficulty defending junior center, Abigail Yelken, who totaled 15 points and 18 rebounds, they were able to outscore the Flyers 11 to 10 in the first half. The game’s fate was sealed only within the final few seconds of overtime when Bose hit a long 3 pointer for the win. Kynlee Marquez and Jenna Hunt added 9 and 6 points respectively to help the Eagles secure their victory.
