CAMBRIDGE - As far as execution of their game plan in Friday’s district championship game, the Cambridge girls basketball team checked a lot of boxes. The Trojans hassled Sumner-Eddyville-Miller’s leading scorer, Taryn Arbuthnot, into 6-of-17 shooting and nine points below her season average.

LINCOLN - While they arrived in district finals Friday by different paths, both the Arapahoe and Maywood/ Hayes Center girls basketball teams rolled away from Shelton and Weeping Water to clinch berths to this week’s Class D1 State Tournament. The Wolves hosted 14-seed Weeping Water Friday and dominated the second half in a 69-55 victory.

After an upset win over top-seeded North Platte St. Pat’s in the D1-12 subdistrict, Maywood/Hayes Center’s boys basketball team missed out on a chance at a state berth with a 36-27 loss to East Butler Monday in the D1-3 district final.

The Medicine Valley boys basketball season came to an end last week in the D2-8 subdistrict with a 42-56 loss to Sumner-Eddyville-Miller. The Raiders fell behind 4-12 in the first quarter and finished the quarter trailing 7-16.

SHELTON - After spotting the host Shelton Bulldogs an 8-2 lead in the first 90 seconds, the Arapahoe girls basketball team quickly took hold of Friday’s district title tilt. Once they had it in their grasp, the Warriors never let go.

HAYES CENTER - Playing in their 10th-consecutive district championship game, the Maywood/Hayes Center girls basketball team knew full well what it needed to do Friday to advance to their first State Tournament since 2021.

Tournament berth. Cambridge finished its season at 17-8.

SHELTON - Following a heartbreaking finish in their Subdistrict opener last Tuesday, the Arapahoe girls basketball team had to sit and wait. Like a lot of bubble teams come Selection Sunday, the Warriors had no control over whether or not their season would continue.

MAYWOOD - A lot can change in 10 weeks. Thursday’s subdistrict championship between topseeded Maywood/Hayes Center and third-seeded Southwest was a rematch from the first weekend of the season when the Wolves routed the Roughriders 84-46.

After the first two nights of Subdistrict action, three area teams won opportunities to compete for the Subdistrict championship on Thursday. At the Subdistrict D2-8 tournament, second-seeded Medicine Valley (14-9) took care of business Tuesday and dismissed third-seeded Sandhills/ Thedford, 51-36, to advance to Thursday’s title game against top-seeded Sumner-Eddyville-Miller(14-8), which ousted Brady, 62-32, on Tuesday.
