The Lady Roughriders and Lady Trojans golf teams competed at the McCook Invite last Friday. Southwest placed 6th of 9 teams with a score of 551. Emma Rasmussen of Cambridge placed the highest of both teams at 15th with a score of 110.

Halftime adjustments made all the difference in Southwest’s big win over South Platte Thursday. The Roughriders saw 11 pass attempts in last season’s 60-6 win over the Knights.

STAPLETON - By grinding out possessions and the clock, the Southern Valley football team won the fourth quarter and their season opener, 34-26, at Sandhills Valley Friday. The victory haulted a 12game losing skid for the Eagles and was their first win to open a season since 2018.

MULLEN - The Medicine Valley football team fell in its first game of the season at Mullen Friday night. Mullen was first on the scoreboard with a touchdown four minutes into the game, but the Raider were quick to respond.

FRANKLIN - The Arapahoe volleyball team took the road to Franklin last week and opened its season with a 3-0 victory over the Flyers. Arapahoe held the Flyers to a negative hitting eficiency in taking the 25-14, 26-24, 2518 victory.

STAMFORD - The Southern Valley/Alma softball team saw its busy weekend of games reduced to a lone home contest with Alliance because of thunderstorms that rolled through the region on Friday. At a home triangular with Alliance and Gothenburg, the Saints dropped a 12-2 contest to the Bulldogs before the remainder of the evening was stopped by rain.

ARCADIA - Behind an explosive three-minute stretch in the third quarter, the Arapahoe football team turned a slugfest into a romp, taking a 38-12 victory at Arcadia-Loup City Friday. After a turnover early in the third quarter, Arapahoe fell behind for the first time when the Rebels turned that fumble into a touchdown for a 12-8 advantage.

AXTELL - It was a busy opening weekend for the Medicine Valley volleyball team, which played five matches int he season’s first three days. The Raiders dropped a five-setter to Maxwell on opening night at home, then took to the road and swept Mullen Friday before win two of three games at the Axtell Tournament Saturday.

HAYES CENTER - The Maywood-Hayes Center volleyball team split its opening triangular Thursday, rolling past Sandhills Valley, 25-12 and 25-19, before dropping a hard-fought match to Paxton, 25-22 and 25-23.
