BENKELMAN - The Cambridge boys and girls cross country teams each finished second place at the Dundy County-Stratton Invite last week, finishing with five individual medalists. In the girls’ race, Brenna Deterding led the Trojans with a runner-up finish while Kori Koeppen was fourth and Rachel Harris was seventh.

By Con Marshall A former Cambridge High School football standout, Bryce Flammang, now of Casper, Wyo., will be inducted into the Chadron State College Athletic Hall of Fame this fall. The ceremonies will be on Saturday, October 15 following the Eagles’ football game against Adams State.

SOUTHERN VALLEY the Southern Valley football team fell behind in the first half and couldn’t escape the hole in a 52-16 loss to Sandhills Valley Friday night. The Eagles trailed just 14-8 after a quarter, but the Mavericks erupted for 30 points in the second to build a 44-16 lead at halftime.

Arapahoe cruises past Franklin in opener

ARAPAHOE - The Arapahoe volleyball team hit the right buttons on opening night and cruised to a 3-0 win over Franklin Thursday to begin their season 1-0. The Warriors were rarely challenged in a 25-10, 25-7, 25-10 victory. The Warriors held the Flyers to negative hitting as Franklin had twice as many errors as kills. Arapahoe also had a strong night at the service line, keeping Franklin out of system throughout the match. No statistical information was available as of press time.

Three Trojans medal at McCook

MCCOOK - Three Trojans medaled and the Cambridge golf team finished third in the eight-team field at the Mc-Cook Invite last week. Macy Jones led the Trojans with a third-place round of 92 while Emma Rasmussen and Jordyn Cross finished 14th and 15th for the Trojans with rounds of 113 and 114.

Hi-Line cross country off and running with title at Med Valley

The Hi-Line girls cross country team started their seasons on a high note Thursday as they had a very successful day at the Medicine Valley Cross Country meet. In the girls' division, Hi-Line put seven of its runners in the top 15. “These girls have been working hard and were rewarded for their efforts with individual medals,” Coach Caleb Wall said. “These girls won the team championship which is a testament to their dedication and the depth of this squad.” Whitney Dickau was the Bulls highest placer at 2nd place. Their newest runner, Whitney Page, ran a solid face and finished in 10th place. Seasoned veterans Natalie Malcom, Dallas Weitzel, Payton Muegerl, Genesee Knackstedt, and Grace Schimmels rounded out their medal count for the girls. Hi-Line freshmen Christian Maurer and Connor Edwards finished within a second of each other and finished 8th and 9th. Bertrand-Loomis captured the boys title with 13 points while Medicine Valley was second with 24 and Maxwell was third with 29.

CAMBRIDGE - In a battle of teams that had yet to lose a set on the young season, the Cambridge volleyball team continued its past streak of success against Southwest with a 25-13, 25-19 victory in the Cambridge Invite Championship on Saturday.

Warriors out-muscle Rebels in opening win

ARAPAHOE - The Arapahoe football team had a physical challenge in its season opener and passed with flying colors as it completed a 36-12 triumph over Arcadia-Loup City Friday night. The Warriors had just 250 yards of offense, but were opportunistic with their field position advantage and forced four ALC turnovers. Trenton Roskop scored three touchdowns rushing and Will Shaw, who led the team with 128 yards on the ground, added another. ALC struck first, scoring in the game’s opening minutes to take a 6-0 lead. The Warriors answered back a few minutes later on a Roskop 4-yard touchdown run. The 2-point conversion put Arapahoe up 8-6 through a quarter. The second quarter was a slog until Arapahoe struck again just before halftime as Roskop again scored from four yards out and the Warriors led 14-6 at the break. Arapahoe grabbed firm control of the contest in the third quarter. The Warriors drove for a touchdown, scoring on a short touchdown run from Shaw, then two minutes later, added the exclamation point when Roskop reached pay dirt from 36 yards out, putting Arapahoe up 28-6.

Bulls run all over Pleasanton in season opener

PLEASANTON - Passing game? The Hi-Line Bulls didn’t need no stinkin’ passing game. The Hi-Line football team opened its season on the road Friday night, running right over the host Pleasanton Bulldogs 64-22.
