HILDRETH - Battling triple-digit heat indexes for a mid-afternoon kickoff, the Southwest football team hung in and battled but eventually fell to Wilcox-Hildreth in Friday’s season opener, 24-6. The Roughriders managed just 117 yards of offense for the game, highlighted by 70 yards rushing from Hunter Cunningham.

ELWOOD - In another night of hard-fought volleyball for Hi-Line, the Bulls emerged a 3-1 winner over Arapahoe Friday. The Bulls coasted in the opening set, but the rest of the night was a battle as Hi-Line won 25-17, 22-25, 26-24, 25-20 to even their record at 1-1 this season.

CAMBRIDGE - In what was otherwise a physical grudge match between likeminded teams, the Cambridge football team used a pair of quick strikes to gain separation and take their season opener, 20-6, over visiting Sutherland Friday night at Clint John Field.

SOUTHERN VALLEY - The Southern Valley football team dropped its season opener to Ravenna Friday night. The Bluejays had their way of things in the first half, building a 42-0 lead at halftime before the Eagles rallied with three scores in the second half to close within 48-22 at game’s end.

The Southern Valley/Alma softball team split a triangular on Tuesday with Chase County and Minden, then dropped both ends of another on Friday to fall to 3-5 this season. The Saints pounded Chase County Tuesday, scoring 10 runs in the opening inning before adding six more in the second en route to a 16-0 victory.
