EUSTIS - Behind another strong serving night, the Hi-Line volleyball team controlled the first two sets, then held off Medicine Valley in four to earn its first victory of the season Tuesday. The Bulls served six aces, led by six from RiLee Schutz and three from Klaire Pohl to roll away to wins of 25-10 and 25-17 in the first two sets.

ARAPAHOE - After opening the season with a four-set win over Franklin Thursday, the Arapahoe volleyball team dropped a straight-sets defeat to Cambridge Friday, falling 25-12, 25-19, 25-10. Cambridge hit .284 in the match as Brooklyn Holtze put down 19 kills and hit .436 individually.

SOUTHERN VALLEY What looked like it might be a sweep turned into a five-set battle on opening night. After Southern Valley held off Hi-Line rallies to take each of the first two sets, the Bulls dominated the next two before the Eagles eventually prevailed in five, 25-21, 25-20, 15-25, 16-25, 15-12 Thursday.

EUSTIS - In a game that featured little offense until the final minutes of the fourth quarter, the Hi-Line football team came up short in a season-opening 30-14 defeat to Arcadia-Loup City Friday. The Bulls and Rebels exchanged first-quarter scores and Arcadia-Loup City took the lead in the second with a safety.

The Maywood/Hayes Center football team kicked off its season in Wallace Friday with a 12-60 loss. MHC received the opening kickoff and used its running game to drive into Wilcox-Hildreth territory.

SOUTHERN VALLEY The Southern Valley football team played a strong second half and made some achievements on offense in Friday night’s season opener against Franklin. But the Eagles had fallen into too deep a hole, due in large part to too much Calvin Carraher.

LEXINGTON - The Southern Valley/Alma softball team captured one victory and had a pair of rallies come up short on opening weekend. On Friday, the Saints fell in an early hole and trailed 7-2 after three innings and 10-2 going to the bottom of the fifth.

After girls golf and softball started their seasons last week, the remainder of high school sports will begin Thursday as cross country, volleyball and football teams open this week. All area teams except for Southwest football will compete this week.

CAMBRIDGE - As area golf teams teed off their season Thursday at the Cambridge Invite at Cross Creek Golf Links, Cambridge’s Hailey Evans and Southwest’s Maddy Tryon finished at the top of the leader board at the nine-hole tournament.
