This February for Heart Health Month, Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) is encouraging everyone to learn how to care for their heart and prevent heart disease. Heart disease is one of the top two causes of death in southwest Nebraska and is the leading cause of death in the United States.

Students invited to submit calendar contest entries

LINCOLN, Neb. — The Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy has sent invitations to schools across the state, seeking students’ entries for the 2026 “Nebraska: Don’t Waste It!” environmental calendar. The contest is open to all Nebraska students from grades K through 12, and the submission deadline is May 1, 2025.

Cambridge Public Schools to hold second Town Hall

After a successful first Town Hall in February at which more than 60 patrons of the school district provided feedback, Cambridge Public Schools will host another Town Hall On Thursday, March 6 to further discuss the district’s plans for a building project. Following feedback from the first meeting with the public on the project, which was initially presented as a plan for a $22.6 million overhaul, demolition and new construction of parts of the facility, changes have been made, Superintendent Jarod Albers said.

The Southwest girls basketball pushed its win streak to 21 with a pair of wins last week and a Subdistrict championship, advancing on to Friday’s district title match against Pleasanton. Arapahoe and Cambridge saw their seasons come to an end at the tournament.

Bulls season ends at subdistricts

GRAND ISLAND - The Hi-Line boys basketball team saw its season come to a close at the C2 subdistrict tournament in Grand Island Monday as the Bulls fell to Heartland, 51-25. Hi-Line could not muster offense in the contest as the Huskies outscored the Bulls 14-5 in the first and 19-7 in the second to build a 33-12 lead at the half.

Southern Valley knocks off Thayer Central to take Subdistrict title

While inclement weather butchered last week’s Subdistrict C2-9 Tournament schedule, it didn’t derail Southern Valley’s efforts in making another postseason run. The second-seeded Eagles cruised past Centennial, 47-30, Thursday then completed the Southern Nebraska Conference sweep with a 4440 victory over top-seeded Thayer Central Saturday to claim the title.
