Lincoln, Neb., June 19 — Nebraska Extension has announced an application deadline extension and enrollment fee deduction for the 2025 Small Meat Processor Management Training Program, which helps owners and managers of small processing plants build their skills and industry knowledge as part of a cohort learning experience.

On June 12, 2025, Cambridge Unit 199 of the American Legion Auxiliary met in regular session in the Community Building with 8 members present. After Presentation of the Colors, Pledge of Allegiance, Prayer and Preamble, President Marlene Witte called the meeting to order at 2:10 p.m. Minutes of the April meeting were read. (There was no meeting in May.) Sue Witte made a motion to approve the minutes; Charla seconded.

Holbrook Days this weekend

Holbrook Days promises spooky fun that won’t be too scary for the whole family this weekend. On Thursday from 2- 4 pm there will be “Bone Chilling” bingo in the community building.

Wayne Earl Heathers was born October 19, 1934 in a farm house in Harlan County, Nebraska and passed away peacefully June 16, 2025 at the Wauneta Care Center, Wauneta, Nebraska at the age of 90. With both of his older brothers off to WWII, Wayne grew up early helping his parents in their wheat fields and independent oil and tire shop.

“Ben” Burton-Furnas County’s First Permanent Settler

The Republican River Valley of southwest Nebraska, prior to the early-1870s, was a great buffalo range with bands of Native Americans roaming the plains following the herds. Change would come quickly to this area, and “Ben” Burton was part of the transition.
The historical marker for Burton’s Bend as its set in Holbrook’s park on Highway 6/34.

Ag Valley Co-op and Land O’ Lakes Foundation donations

Ag Valley Co-op, in partnership with the Land O’ Lakes Foundation, proudly donated a total of $10,000 last week to support two local food pantries serving southwest Nebraska communities. Donations of $5,000 each were made to the Frontier County Food Bank in Eustis, Nebraska and the Oxford Food Pantry in Oxford, Nebraska.
