October 9, 1930

A Republican caucus nominated precinct officers: Assessor for Oxford and Oxford Precinct, Homer Twileger; Justice of the Peace, Charles Breithaupt; for Road Overseer, Dist 11, Harry F. Hartman. 1,200 ringed perch were placed in the Oxford Lake from the hatchery at Minatare.

October 17, 1940

Mrs. Hubert M. Thomas, co-pastor of the Oxford Baptist Church, is to be ordained. She will be the first woman in the state to have such an honor bestowed upon her.

Glen McQuiston returned from a baseball trip with the Champion Refiners who won four of the seven games played, thus winning the World’s semi-pro championship. The trip was to Puerto Rico. Oil field crews were busy drilling an oil well, nine miles southeast of Beaver City on the E.E. Goosic farm in Lincoln precinct.

October 12, 1950

Realizing that socialization of medicine is a direct threat to the medical profession put its case before the public in a series of advertisements in newspapers all over the country.

Rumor was rampant in the area north and west of town that a mountain lion or some such animal is roaming the countryside.

Coach Ray Muckle’s Oxford Cardinals defeated Elwood 25 – 0, making the fourth conference win for the team.

Glenn Jansma returned from Jasper, MN and will be employed at the Swanson plant, replacing Harold Mussman who has been called to service. George Runck of Carter has a damaged truck and Lyle Steele of Arapahoe a damaged car as the result of hitting a steer on Hwy 3 east of Oxford.

October 13, 1960

Tom Wildman of Edison was high bidder on the John Dillon farm at the sale, bidding $22,500 for the 180-acre plant.

Workmen are busy this week tearing down the old Thulin Hatchery building to make room for a new hatchery building.

October 15, 1970

The 1970 Homecoming King Duane Murdoch and Queen Pauline McQuiston were crowned Friday night after the Orleans and Oxford football game. Newel Sanderson reported to Omaha on Wednesday for duty with the U.S. Air Force for pilot training. He was to go to San Antonio, TX for three months training.

October 16, 1980

The Board of Directors of the Oxford Development Corporation has been notified by Bonney Forge Division Gulf and Western that they are going to close the Oxford plant within the next two months. They are closing several plants in the country due to the recession.

Several residents were watching when Barnum and Bailey’s big circus train went through Oxford.

October 18, 1990

Oxford will have a greatly enlarged recycling program effective this Saturday, thanks to some 35 5 th and 6 th grade students. The youth will be going door to door for this project.

Over 700 students participated in the NMPP/MEAN first annual Poster contest. Of the 700, Dawn Phillips of Beaver City was among the 12 to win first place and Kevin Peterson, Oxford was one of 12 earning 2 nd place honors.

Members of the Cardinal Country Club are looking for donations to improve the golf club’s cart path. Cloyd Clark, District 11 judge who serves 17 southcentral Nebraska counties, including Furnas, is among 33 judges up for re-election.

SVHS Cheerleaders won the Team Cheer Championship trophy in the large division at a camp in Broken Bow. Abby Simpson also won the in All-Star competition and will have the opportunity to perform in the London parade.

Neighbors and friends of Virgil Einspahr gathered together Saturday, Oct.9, to harvest his 2010 corn crop. Virgil has been hospitalized for the past two weeks for medical procedures.

Southern Valley’s softball team finished the 2010 season in third place in the District C-6 competition. Teamwork, individual concentration and good coaching kept the Lady Eagles volleyball team in second place in the Sub-district C1-11 competition last week as Eagles defeated both Cambridge and Silver Lake. The wins advanced the girls to a 9-9 season, a marked improvement over last year when both Cambridge and Silver Lake defeated the Eagles in three sets each and put the 2009 team at 5-10 as of Oct. 9, 2009.
