Lincoln, Neb. – Producing more and doing it with less is sustainability in Nebraska. As farmers are working long hours to bring their crops in this harvest, Nebraska Corn celebrates the vital work each of them does this National Farmer’s Day on October 12.

Foster named Homecoming queen at Peru State College

Alyse Foster was crowned Queen during Peru State College’s Homecoming. Alyse is the daughter of Mike Foster and Peru State alumni Katie Foster and is the granddaughter of John and Sara Gilbert. She is from Indianola, Nebraska. Alyse is a Criminal Justice Administration major with a minor in theater. Her post-graduation plans include victim advocate or detective work. She is involved in Peru Theatre Company, Residence Hall Association, Women’s Choir, PRIDE, working as a student worker and student ambassador in the admissions office, and is the 2nd floor RA for Morgan Hall. Central Platte nRD to Give Free native Prairie Seed on october 20th

(GRAND ISLAND, NE)- Planting tall grass prairies and wildflowers is vital for Nebraska’s wildlife. The Central Platte Natural Resources District (CPNRD) will hand out native prairie seed to the public on Friday, October 20th to increase grassland awareness and improve wildlife habitat in Nebraska.

People planning to launch boats in Nebraska this fall should beware of low-water conditions across the state. The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission advises boaters to be patient and cautious when launching and loading a boat.

Handwashing is Key to Good Health

Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) is encouraging everyone to review how they wash their hands. Keeping hands clean is one of the most important steps to take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others. Many diseases and conditions are spread by not washing hands with soap and clean running water, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Applefest fills Orleans with vendors and shoppers

The 39th annual Applefest was held in Orleans on Saturday, October 7. The festival had over 100 vendors that filled the Ag Center, 4H building, Legion, streets and park. A parade in the morning was followed by plenty of kids activities and wagon rides. The Harlan County Historical Society and Museum along with the blacksmith shop were also open to the public. The historic Orleans Hotel hosted an open house. Many shops were also open. The day ended with with live music at Paddington Station.
