The Tri Valley Health System monthly diabetes support group will be held on Monday, March 7 at 5:00 p.m. in the Meadowlark Meeting Room, which can be accessed through the Wellness Center entrance or the main entrance. Dr. Kaspar-Cope will be presenting on the benefits of increasing fiber in the diet along with recipes and taste testing. Tri Valley Health System invites anyone with the diagnosis of diabetes as well as a support person to join the free support group and there’s no need to pre-register. Tri Valley Medical Foundation is currently accepting scholarship applications for students in our area. High School seniors and students currently enrolled in college pursuing careers in the medical field and nursing programs are encouraged to apply.

Arapahoe’s Thomas Magorian received 2nd place in the State Spelling Bee Competition held February 26 at the University of Nebraska Strauss Performing Arts Center in Omaha. There were 70 participants from 5th-8th grade that came from Nebraska and southwest Iowa. This was the 93rd annual regional bee, the first year it was sponsored by the Omaha Sports Commission. There were 2 written rounds until 12 students were left for the oral round. The word he missed was “acquirable.” The winner was Ananya Rao Prassanna, a 5th grader from Elkhorn. The progressive people of the town led by the Commercial Club, raised enough funds to furnish a desirable site.

25 Years Ago February 20, 1997 Southern Valley participated in the District C-4 Wrestling Meet in Bridgeport on Saturday and qualified five for the state wrestling tournament this weekend: Tyler Powell (112), Caleb Quinn (119), Brett Hammond (130), Frank Lamb (140) and Mike Stalder (145). Pastor Bob Schaffer of the Grace Brethren Church in Beaver City shared experiences of his recent trip to Israel.

10 years ago Thrivent will sponsor a benefit for Dean Huxoll on Sunday, March 4, at Holbrook Community Building to assist Dean in medical expenses due to major surgery for cancer in his mouth. During the Furnas County Commissioners meeting on February 14th the group accepted the resignation of Judy Beins, Clerk of the District Court.

10 years ago Cambridge student Cory Shoff took second in the oral competition and Kimber Boley took fourth in the written competition at the Furnas County Spelling Bee last Wednesday. Cambridge Swing Choir competed in the Nebraska Choral Directors Show Choir Festival at Imperial.
