Funding available for farmers and ranchers to develop conservation

LINCOLN, Neb., April 13, 2021 – The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) has funding available to Nebraska’s farmers and ranchers to develop Conservation Activity Plans. These plans are developed to help identify and find solutions for specific natural resource concerns on a farming operation. Applications for this year’s funding are currently being accepted at local NRCS offices through June 18.

NPPD inspecting wood poles throughout the state

Columbus, Neb. - Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) has contracted with Osmose Utilities Service to inspect wood poles used in its distribution, sub transmission and transmission operations throughout the District’s service territory. Crews from the contractors are beginning inspections this month and will be completing the work by July 1.

The Southwest Elementary Rockin’ Riders

The Southwest Elementary Rockin’ Riders completed their last community service project for this school year by collecting items for the Blessing Box. They filled the box and had extra items left over for later use. The Blessing Box is located outside of the Methodist Church in Indianola and is available to anyone in need of nonperishable items. The Rockin’ Riders would like to thank everyone who contributed to this project. They also will be finishing work on the landscape area at the elementary before the school year is over. The Rockin’ Riders also have an activity planned for Teacher Appreciation Day on May 4. It’s been a busy, funfilled year for the Rockin’ Riders.

South Central West Community Wildfire Protection Plan Completed

The South Central West Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) for Franklin, Furnas, Harlan, Kearney, and Phelps Counties has been completed. Counties, emergency managers, fire departments, and natural resources agencies worked with the Nebraska Forest Service (NFS) to prepare the plan, which is intended to enhance collaboration and communication among the various entities who manage fire in the western south-central region of Nebraska, and to help them effectively prepare for and respond to wildfire.

National Heritage Area still bringing mixed feelings

The last time that Congress acted on a measure containing the words “Kansas-Nebraska,” it became one of the major catalysts for the Civil War, So it should come as no surprise that establishing a Kansas-Nebraska National Heritage Area (NHA) has become a political hot potato. Like the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854, establishing the proposed NHA would literally require an Act of Congress.
