Drug Enforcement Administration encourages open conversations on danger of drugs and social media as students return to school OMAHA, Nebraska – As students across the state prepare to return to school, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Omaha Division is encouraging families to have open conversations about the potentially lethal consequences of drug experimentation and the threat posed by drug dealers on social media. In Nebraska, DEA has seized more than 145,000 fentanyl pills in the first seven months of 2025.

Garden Prairie Church to hold annual Ice Cream Social August 17th

The Garden Prairie Church will hold their annual ice cream social this Sunday August 17th from 5-7 p.m. at the church located on Highway 83 about 16 miles south of Maywood. With over 20 kinds of ice cream & desserts being served. A free will offering will go to Homestead Rescue at Wellfleet & L2 for Kids at McCook.

Maintenance work will begin on US 283, south of Lexington

Aug. 7, 2025 (McCook, Neb.) — Weather permitting, a chip seal project will begin Monday, Aug. 11 on U.S. Highway 283 (US-283), according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation. Chip seal is an application of an asphalt binder to a roadway surface followed by an aggregate.

Fish Kills occuring in Nebraska

Recent hot temperatures, followed by several cloudy days, have contributed to the occurrence of fish kills in Nebraska. The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission recently investigated fish kills at Omaha’s Benson Park Pond and Pioneer Trails Lake near Aurora Summer fish kills, a natural phenomenon of fish dying off in large numbers during the summer months, often are caused by low dissolved oxygen levels in the water.
