Hans Gerhardt Stickel, 86, of Oxford, died on Saturday, January 6, 2024, at the Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege. He was born May 19, 1937, in Stuttgart, Germany, the eldest of three sons born to Ernst and Luise (Miller) Stickel.
Hans was raised in Stuttgart until the age of 7, then moved with his parents to Bietigheim because their home in Stuttgart was bombed in the war. His dad found work in Bietigheim, where Hans finished his education at the Volksschule. He then entered Berufschule (or Vocational School), as an apprentice, where he learned the auto repair trade. He finished in 1954. From there, he worked in Switzerland for a year and a half, then moved back to Germany and worked at the Porsche and Mercedes Benz Factory in Stuttgart, Germany.
Hans immigrated to the United States with Rosemarie on March 10, 1960, and on August 13, 1960, he married Rosemarie Geiger in Sacramento, California.
He owned and operated his body shop, “Stickel Brothers’ Body Shop”, with his brother, Walter for four years. He then owned his own body shop for an additional 14 years. Hans then began to sell Body Shop Equipment and Supplies as “S & S Equipment & Supplies” until 1991.
The couple moved to Springfield, Missouri in 1991, where Hans continued to sell body shop equipment and supplies.
Because of his love for cattle, he purchased a farm and raised cattle in Falcon, Missouri until his retirement in 2020. In 2022, Hans and Rosemarie moved to Oxford to be near Christa and her husband, Wes.
Hans loved working with his hands and was a jack-of-all trades. He enjoyed watching sports car racing, reading, gardening, photography, and taking care of his cattle and farm. He was a member of The Gideons International and University Heights Baptist Church in Springfield, Missouri, and the Oxford Evangelical Free Church after they moved to Oxford.
He leaves to celebrate his life; his wife, Rosemarie Stickel of Oxford; his children: Christa Holen and her husband, Wes of Oxford; and Michael Stickel and his wife, Tara of Elk Grove, California; three grandchildren: Lyndsey Flick and her husband, Matthew of Folsom, California; Blake Holen of Chicago, Illinois; and Ashley Blesio and her husband, Matt of Meadow Vista, California; great-grandchild, Graham Michael Flick; 2 brothers: Walter Stickel and his wife, Esther of Sacramento, California; and Wilhelm Stickel and his wife, Ute of Freudental, Germany; one brother-in-law: Alfred Geiger of Fair Oaks, California; and a host of nieces, nephews, and many friends.
Hans was preceded in death by his parents, Ernst and Luise Stickel; mother-in-law, Emma Geiger; fatherin-law, Willy Geiger; and two sisters-in-law: Sigrid Penrose and her husband, Emery; and Annemarie Geiger.
Following Hans’ wishes, there will be no formal visitation.
