SHIRLEY J. SABLE ANDREWS
Shirley June Sable Andrews, known as June, passed away August 11, 2026, at Primrose Retirement Community of Grand Island Nebraska at the age of 88.
A memorial service celebrating June’s life will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday, September 5th at All Faiths Funeral Home, 2929 S. Locust St., Grand Island. Visitation is from 9:30 until the time of the service.
Burial will be at a later date in Holbrook Cemetery.
June was born June 3, 1938, to Edward and Patricia Pearl McDougall Woods Sable in Del Rapids, South Dakota.
Soon after moving to McCook, Nebraska at an early age, she and her sister MaryEllen Sable Long lost their father, after which they moved to Cambridge, Nebraska for her formative years growing up. They were raised by a strong, determined mother, Pearl Sable, giving them lifelong strength and guidance, including the heroic actions of being saved by their mother from the 1947 Medicine Creek flood at Cambridge. Their mother broke through the ceiling of their home, placing the girls in the attic as she stood on furniture in the flood waters, enduring several hours in that condition before being rescued.
June was educated all 12 years in the Cambridge Public School system, Cambridge, Nebraska, graduating in 1956. She was popular in school, becoming a cheerleader.
June’s employment history is an amazing list of accomplishments throughout her life. She began work as a babysitter and then as a lifeguard at the swimming pool—with a certain young man becoming attracted to that lifeguard— resulting in a lifetime of love from her future husband, Roger!
June was married to Roger Gary Andrews on November 14, 1959, at the Cambridge Methodist Church. Thus began a love story, being married for over 66 years!
As always, June found employment almost upon demand.
Completing High School graduation, she worked for Twin Valley Public Power District in Cambridge. After their marriage, June and Roger relocated to the Colorado Springs Air Force Base for Roger’s assignment, June was quickly employed by the Exchange National Bank, Colorado Springs, CO. When Roger was assigned to Thule, Greenland, June came back to live with her mother in Cambridge, getting a job with the McCook REA.
Due to the Cold War circumstances, Roger was next assigned to Oxnard California. June joined Roger getting a top-secret security clearance and working for Raytheon. Following Roger’s separation from the Air Force, June again followed Roger’s job with the Bureau of Reclamation to Grand Island Nebraska, working temporarily for the meat packing plant and then with the ASCS, meeting many farmers in the Grand Island area. Roger’s employment then took him to Portland Oregon, where June worked for the Multnomah School district. Soon after, Roger was rehired by the Bureau of Reclamation, and June was hired by the N L Terteling firm in Boise, Idaho.
In 1971, Roger and June returned permanently to Grand Island, Nebraska. June was employed by The Overland National Bank for over 26 years, rising to the office of Assistant Vice President, developing many close relationships with customers and friends throughout the area. To complete June’s employment history, June was a salesclerk for Sartor Hamann Jewelry in Grand Island for 12 years. June studied gemology and became a certified grader, helping many customers to make the proper choices in their jewelry selections.
Community Service was a hallmark of June’s existence, especially in Grand Island. She was a member of the Chamber of Commerce and chaired and co-chaired many projects. She was a member and officer of PEO, Chapter EZ. As a member of the Stuhr Museum Foundation, Trinity United Methodist Church, Nebraska State Fair Volunteer for 10 years, United Way, Red Cross, Salvation Army, St Francis Medical Center Board, Community Foundation Board, and the Grand Island Area Council for International Visitors, were the many organizations to which she contributed.
June’s lifelong passion was a love of animals, especially her many dogs. From Garcon, Nugget, Charly, Maggy, on to the Dandie Dinmont Terriers— Abbie, Beckett, Carrie, Daphne, Edie, and finally to 14 years with Finley. She dearly loved and gave devotion to loving and caring for them all. This led to her involvement of the Grand Island Kennel Club and the Dandie Dinmont Terrier Club of America, chairing a National dog show and attending many of their shows. Her love of these dogs took her on many adventures across the country.
June was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Pearl Sable; parents-in-law Donald C & Nina Andrews; half siblings, Boyd Woods, Kenneth Woods, Ivan Woods, Buddy Woods, William Woods, and Jeanne Woods Sable; sister, MaryEllen Sable Long; and brothers-inlaw and sisters-in-law, Donald H Andrews, Robert & Connie Andrews, Richard & Janet Andrews, and Ronald McPhee.
June is survived by husband, Roger G Andrews; and her beloved pet dog, Finley; brotherin- law Roger Long; sisters-in-law Lucetta Andrews and Mary Alice McPhee; and numerous family nephews and nieces and their extended families.
