Virgel Carr, 82, of Athens, passed away on July 21, 2024, in Athens.

Virgel Dean Carr was born in Elma, Washington, on August 8, 1941. He was the son of Glenn Carr and Velma Eliza (Bussard) Carr. He graduated from Hayes County High School in Hayes Center, Nebraska.

Following high school, he attended McCook Community College in Mc-Cook, Nebraska, and the University of Wyoming in Laramie, WY.

Virgel was drafted and served in the United States Army from 1965 to 1967, attaining the rank of E5. Upon his discharge, Virgel returned to Wyoming, where he obtained his Land Surveyor License. As an associate for Banner and Associates, Virgel was involved in developing, surveying, and inspecting major pipelines and water treatment plants throughout Wyoming and northern Colorado.

In 1995, he moved back to Nebraska to work for Miller and Associates.

In this role, he surveyed throughout western Nebraska and northern Kansas and later managed the office in Ogallala, Nebraska.

In 2016, Virgel relocated to Athens to be closer to his family.

Virgel had a passion for amateur photography, loved bluegrass music, enjoyed belt beading, and woodworking.

His wooden train set and toy cars are his favorite treasures.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Berdine Norlander, and one brother, Roy Carr.

Survivors include his siblings, Naomi Pinger of Mansfield, Washington, Ruthann Shelton and husband Jack of Athens, and Audrey Martens and husband Les of Athens; his nieces and nephews, Judy Sims, Bruce Hewson and wife Marina, Alan Hewson, Scott Hewson, Debbie Glover and husband Mark, and Dana Turner and husband Dave; along with numerous great nieces and nephews.

Burial will be at the Maywood Nebraska Cemetery on Saturday, August 31, 2024 at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation or Wounded Warrior Project.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Hannigan Smith Funeral Home family.
