The Nebrask School Activities Association still has not released the Subdistrict Pairings for Girls Basketball. The Subdistrict tournaments are to be played next week, but the hosts had not been determined yet, as of Wednesday morning.

Southern Valley soars past Alma on Senior Night

After a loss to Alma in the RPAC tournament, Southern Valley (8-9) proves victorious in a rematch during their regular conference play over the Alma Cardinals (13-5) on Friday evening. The Eagles jumped out with an early lead in the first half due to their unrelenting, full-court defense. This sent the Cardinals into the locker room down by 11 points at the half. The Eagle defense didn’t back down outscoring Alma 16-8 in the third quarter. Although the Cardinals began to break down the Eagle defense in the fourth quarter, their efforts were unable to overcome the deficit resulting in a final score of 56 to 40. The Eagles were led in scoring by Senior Kynlee Marquez with 20 points and four steals. She was followed in scoring by teammate Ann Bose with 17 points, 9 total rebounds and 7 steals. Brianna Quinn added 4 points, 12 total rebounds, and 5 steals while Krista Best and Jessica Lambert added an additional 7 and 6 points respectively. The Lady Eagles will take on Gibbon (9-4) in their next matchup on Tuesday night.

The Legacy of Coach Mike Lanham

Southern Valley Assistant Boy’s high school coach, Mike Lanham, is set to retire for a second time from the school’s basketball program at the end of the 2021 season. He began coaching in 1975 at Oxford High School in the women’s program, transitioned to Southern Valley as the AD and girl’s basketball coach, and has been coaching with the boy’s basketball team. All of this is for a combination of 45 years. He ends his coaching career with a varsity record of 652 wins-253 losses, which is an overall winning percentage of 72%.

Big Weekend for Berry

Not only did Clayton Berry, Southern Valley Senior, lead his team in scoring in Friday night’s game, he had two other milestones on Friday as well. Berry signed with the Doane Tigers on Friday morning to run track under Coach Ed Fye. During Senior Night vs. the Alma Cardinals, he hit another high as Berry knocked down his l000th career point late in the 4th quarter.

NORTH PLATTE - The Cambridge girls basketball team split a pair of games last week as it grinds toward the end of the regular season this weekend. The Trojans put forth one of their best performances of the season Tuesday when they traveled to Bertrand and left town with a 50-31 victory.

Without much ability to slow the Broncos down, the Hi-Line boys basketball team dropped a road game at Amherst Monday, 83-40. The Broncos put up 31 points in the first quarter and just kept scoring, building a 48-32 lead at the half before dominating the second half 35-8 to take the contest by 43 points.

Cambridge sends nine to district tournament

With a third-place team finish at the Class D, SubDistricts 3B tournament, Cambridge advances nine wrestlers to the District finals, which will be hosted at Central Valley on Saturday, Feb. 13. Matches are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. Saturday.
