Each of the five area boys basketball teams saw their seasons come to a close early this week at subdistrict tournaments. At the Subdistrict D1-9 Tournament in Loomis, Southern Valley took down Arapahoe on opening night, 59-49, as the Eagles jumped to a big early lead, then held on down the stertch for victory.

OMAHA - Both Southern Valley’s Braxton Hammond, pictured above pinning Alma’s Carter Brandyberry in the 106 pound championship match Saturday night, and Arapahoe’s Levi Kerner, who’s pictured celebrating a state championship at 285 pounds with coaches Brandon Mues and John E Koller, had dominant runs at the Class D State Tournament last weekend in Omaha. At local district wrestling competitions this weekend, 20 wrestlers from five area schools earned their way to this weekend's Class D State Wrestling Tournament in Omaha. Some wrestlers dominated in much the same fashion that they have the entire season.

CAMBRIDGE - The Cambridge and Southwest girls basketball teams will get a second meeting this season. The two will square off in Thursday’s Subdistrict D1-12 Final at Cambridge after each posted a convincing win Tuesday night in the opening round.

AMHERST - The Southern Valley girls basketball team avenged an earlier loss to South Loup with a 52-37 victory Tuesday night in the first round of the C2-10 Sub-district Tournament. The Eagles used a 21-point second quarter to blow open a 36-20 lead at the half.

Boys subdistrict tournaments will begin Monday and Tuesday for local boys basketball teams. While not all game times had been set as of press time, tournament brackets can be found on Page B3.

The Cambridge boys basketball team split with Alma and Chase County over the weekend, taking down the Cardinals 68-57 on Friday before falling 76-45 to Chase County on Saturday. The Trojans led throughout the contest against Alma, but didn’t take control until building as big as a 25-point lead in the third quarter.

ARAPAHOE - The Arapahoe boys basketball team dropped a home contest with Bertrand Friday, 78-40. The Vikings lit up the scoreboard throughout the contest as they built a 31-16 lead at the half and expanded the margin to 50-38 to the fourth quarter.

SOUTHERN VALLEY - the Southern Valley boys basketball team dropped a pair of home games last week, falling to Gibbon on Tuesday and Dundy County-Stratton on Friday. The Eagles lost a 70-41 decision to the Buffaloes on Tuesday.
