SHELBY - In a tournament that featured seven of the top 14 teams in the latest NEWrestle rankings, District D-2 proved to be a dogfight at most weight classes. Both Cambridge and Southwest managed to qualify individuals for this week’s Class D State Tournament.

WEEPING WATER - The Southern Valley wrestling team advanced three on to the State Tournament and had three others come within a win of State while finishing sixth at the District D-1 Tournament. Braxton Hammond improved to 46-2 while pinning his way to a title at 120.

Seventeen wrestlers headed to CHI

Across five different district tournaments, seventeen local wrestlers qualified for this week’s State Wrestling Tournament in Omaha. Beginning with Friday’s Girls District 4 Tournament at Broken Bow, both Southwest’s Madelyn Tryon, who finished runner-up at 190 pounds, and Southern Valley’s Hayley Serfontein, who took third at 120 pounds, qualified for the Girls State Tournament, which is still one class of this season.

SOUTHERN VALLEY - The Southern Valley girls basketball team passed its first postseason test with flying colors Tuesday, rolling past Loomis, 51-23. The Eagles jumped all over the Wolves in the first half, grabbing a 21-1 lead after a quarter before taking a 39-4 lead to the break.

CAMBRIDGE - Through two nights at the D2 subdistrict in Cambridge, a darkhorse has emerged. Fifth-seeded Wauneta-Palisade knocked off fourthseeded Medicine Valley, 54-51, on Monday, then bounced top-seeded Cambridge, 43-41, Tuesday to advance to the championship game Thursday against Dundy County-Stratton.

Four local bowlers compete at State Tournament

LINCOLN - Four individuals reached the Class B State Bowling Tournament from last Wednesday’s District Tournament and Lexington and competed in the State Tournament’s individual event on Monday. In the girls’ competition, Arapahoe’s Lauren Moore, who finished second at districts last week, finished just outside of qualifying for the championship bracket Monday, taking ninth place.

ARNOLD - The Southern Valley girls basketball team saw its win streak reach 17 over the weekend as they posted road wins at Alma and South Loup to get to 21-1 on the season. Friday, the Eagles used a similar recipe to their victory over Alma in the RPAC semifinals a week earlier.

Wolves remain unbeaten in 2024

MERNA - The Maywood-Hayes Center boys basketball team remained unbeaten in 2024 with three wins in three days over the weekend to improve their record to 18-2 this season. The Wolves escaped Hershey with a 48-45 win Thursday, then rolled past Hitchcock County, 71-48, on Friday and past Anselmo-Merna, 61-34, on Saturday.
