LINCOLN - For three quarters, the Southern Valley girls basketball team had drawn the high-octane, scoring machine of Guardian Angels Central Catholic into the depths of a rock fight. After surrendering the lead, the Eagles made the biggest plays down the stretch and rode their defense to a 34-29 victory that vaulted them into the State Finals.

LINCOLN - For the second-straight day and for the third game in 38 hours, the Southern Valley girls basketball team kept an explosive offensive team in check. Squaring off with Pender, the defending Class C2 champion, in the Class D1 State Title Game Saturday morning, the Eagles held the top-seeded Pendragons 22 points under their scoring average.

Wolves roll past Potter-Dix for district title

MAYWOOD - Any suspense in the District D2-2 Final quickly dissipated Saturday as Maywood-Hayes Center held visiting Potter-Dix scoreless over the first 12 minutes of the game, built a 27-0 lead and rolled to a 60-21 victory, clinching a berth at the State Tournament.

SOUTHERN VALLEY - At its district final Friday, the Southern Valley girls basketball team did what it’s successfully done all season. The Eagles dealt a knockdown blow in the opening quarter, then maintained that early lead to the finish of a 54-33 district championship victory over Amherst, clinching the Eagles’ second-straight berth at the State Tournament.

KEARNEY - For the second-straight year, the Maywood-Hayes Center girls basketball team battled Elgin Public/Pope John in a backand-forth battle for a trip to the State Tournament. And for the secondstraight year, the Wolfpack got the better of the Wolves with a 51-44 district final victory that propelled EPPJ to the State Tournament.

Cambridge offense stalls in district final loss

LITCHFIELD - After a 5432 setback in Thursday’s Subdistrict final at Dundy County-Stratton, the Cambridge boys basketball team earned itself a trip to a district final Saturday via wild card. But against another of the top teams in Class D1, the Trojans’ offense was suffocated by an active zone defense as Ansley-Litchfield rolled away to a 46-23 win to clinch a State Tournament berth.
