Larry “Newk” Keith Newcomb of Minden, Nebraska passed away Wednesday, August 23, 2023, at the age of 58 at Kearney Regional Medical Center, Kearney, Nebraska. Funeral services was held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, August 28, 2023 at Minden United Methodist Church with the Rev. Peter Choi offi ciating. The service was streamed to the church’s Facebook and YouTube pages. Interment was held following the service at the Upland Cemetery.

Medicine Valley wins three on opening weekend

AXTELL - It was a busy opening weekend for the Medicine Valley volleyball team, which played five matches int he season’s first three days. The Raiders dropped a five-setter to Maxwell on opening night at home, then took to the road and swept Mullen Friday before win two of three games at the Axtell Tournament Saturday.

‘Riders take Cambridge Tourney Title

CAMBRIDGE - Since the Cambridge Volleyball Invite expanded to pool play three years ago, Cambridge and Southwest have matched up in the championship game each time. On Saturday, the Trojans and Roughriders both dominated pool play before Southwest got the better of Cambridge in the finals and took its first tournament title at the event.

The Lady Roughriders and Lady Trojans golf teams competed at the McCook Invite last Friday. Southwest placed 6th of 9 teams with a score of 551. Emma Rasmussen of Cambridge placed the highest of both teams at 15th with a score of 110.

Big third quarter propels Arapahoe past ALC in season opener

ARCADIA - Behind an explosive three-minute stretch in the third quarter, the Arapahoe football team turned a slugfest into a romp, taking a 38-12 victory at Arcadia-Loup City Friday. After a turnover early in the third quarter, Arapahoe fell behind for the first time when the Rebels turned that fumble into a touchdown for a 12-8 advantage.

SOUTHERN VALLEY - The Southern Valley volleyball team rolled past Hi-Line on opening night, taking a 25-4, 25-12, 25-13 victory ovr the visiting Bulls. The Eagles dominated at the service line, serving 23 aces in the match, including 14 from Ann Bose.

Thelma Ann Riepe-Sprague who was raised in the Arapahoe area along with her cousin Barbara Ann Wendland- Maaske. Both will be turning 90 years old. Thelma Ann is the last of the George and Thelma Riepe family.

Saints see weekend disrupted by weather

STAMFORD - The Southern Valley/Alma softball team saw its busy weekend of games reduced to a lone home contest with Alliance because of thunderstorms that rolled through the region on Friday. At a home triangular with Alliance and Gothenburg, the Saints dropped a 12-2 contest to the Bulldogs before the remainder of the evening was stopped by rain.

The Maywood/Hayes Center football team got off to a slow start Thursday in Sutherland, but the Wolves claimed a win in the first game of the season 26-22. Facing a brand new head coach for the Sailors, MHC Head Coach Jeff Erickson said the Wolves had no clue what to expect from Sutherland.
