Trap Shooting discussed at SV Board meeting

The Southern Valley School Board heard from Tina Hutchens regarding the trap shooting team during their regular meeting on Monday, May 8. Hutchens reported they had 41 kids out this year including junior high and high school. This is a large increase and has increased their costs.

Oxford renews law enforcement agreement

The Village of Oxford Board of Trustees renewed their agreement with the Furnas County Sheriff’s Department for law enforcement during their regular meeting on Monday, May 8. Sheriff Doug Brown joined by phone to discuss the contract with the board. He explained that the annual price increase is now based on the consumer price index or 3%, whichever amount is higher. Brown said other than that the only changes to the contract are an addendum to further define terms and procedures of the things they already do.

It’s a busy week for the school district as the board held their regular meeting on Monday evening, just days before high school graduation on May 13 at 2:00 p.m. The last day of school for K-11 grades will be Wednesday, May 17 and their first day back for the new school year will be August 10.

Thursday crash at Deerfield Corner claims two lives

BEAVER CITY - Tragedy struck last Thursday over the noon hour when a two-vehicle crash claimed the lives of a woman and a child, sent five others to area hospitals and landed one of the injured in the custody of authorities. At 12;15 p.m.
Kyiaz Ulanov was arraigned in Furnas County Court Monday. he has been charged with two counts of motor vehicle homicide as well as willful wreckless driving.

Cambridge Council agrees to proceed with walking trail expansion

Cambridge City Council met in regular session on Monday, May 1, 2023. Council began by approving the minutes from the April 17, 2023 meeting. Council then approved the claims and the Cambridge Volunteer Fire Department minutes after a brief discussion about the minutes. Council then approved the Cambridge Rescue Service meeting minutes as submitted.

May 1, 2023 We had rain! I dumped .46” out of the gauge here on The Hill! A wheat crop that won’t make, but it at least gave everything a clean look. Hopefully it primed the pump and we’ll get more real soon.
The Southwest 6th grade took a field trip to the Danbury Depot Museum Friday morning to learn about local area history.

Beaver City Pool to Open May 24

BEAVER CITY – During the Beaver City Council regular meeting on May 1, 2023, it was announced that the swimming pool will open on May 24, prior to the Memorial Day weekend. The Veteran’s Memorial will also be back in place by Memorial Day.

MCC students inducted into Phi Theta Kappa

Thirteen McCook Community College students were inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society Monday at the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center. The ceremony included guest speaker Molly Smith, President/CEO of the Mc-Cook Chamber of Commerce who spoke about “The World Needs Who You Were Made to Be.” New members were inducted during a candle lighting ceremony.
