Investigation continues on Arapahoe Hit-and-Run

ARAPAHOE – On Wednesday, May 6, at approximately 10 p.m., the Furnas County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 500 block of Chestnut Street (U.S. Highway 6) in Arapahoe, following a report of multiple downed power poles. The incident resulted in a traffic blockage on the highway and a localized power outage affecting the surrounding area.

Local results from Tuesday’s Primary Election

While the number of competitive local races was diminished in the 2026 Primary Election, there were still a number of contested races that sent voters to the polls Tuesday. In the race for the Nebraska Legislature’s District 38 seat, Tim Anderson of Sutton (receiving 35 percent of the vote) and Janell Anderson Ehrke of Orleans (receiving 31 percent) advanced to the General Election.

Drought planning groups across state urge public to conserve water

The Platte Basin Coalition, the Lower Platte River Drought Consortium, the Republican River Basin NRDs, and the Nebraska Department of Water, Energy, and Environment (DWEE) are urging the public to utilize water conservation best practices due to the ongoing presence of drought conditions throughout Nebraska. As of April 30th, the National Drought Mitigation Center finds that 2% of the state is experiencing exceptional drought (D4), 55% of the state is experiencing extreme drought (D3), 21% of the State is experiencing severe drought (D2), and 9% of the state is experiencing moderate drought (D1). While recent rains have been helpful, they have not been sufficient to substantially alter the drought conditions for many areas of the state.
